does this class look good on your college app?
is it worth taking?

i am considering stanford.

No, it looks bad. Avoid at all costs.

It probably looks better than the alternative US history course.

seriously, taking an AP class makes it look like you are lazy

is the class a lot of work?
becuase i will have 5 other busy weighted classes

All APs depend strongly on your teacher. It can be easy or hard.

i can't tell if everyone's being serious or not. does ap us actually have the reputation of being easy?

No: they're being facetious.

Though some APs do have a reputation for being easy at certain schools. For example, AP English was kind of a joke (it just started this year) until last week, when my teacher decided that we're going to have essays all the time because we haven't done anything up until now. What poor timing: it was show week for me, and "we have 15 hours of rehearsal" is apparently not compelling enough for my teacher.

it really does depend on the teacher. ask around at your school. when i took it, it was really hard, but not there is a teacher who gives easy A's

Colleges will always look highly upon someone who takes the most challenging classes possible, so it would definitely help.

I scored a 3 on my AP U.S. exam. Do i have to take a u.s. history course in college since i am bad on learning U.S. history, contrasting that I performed really well on my AP chemistry class and getting a 5 on the chem exam. I just wonder if taking AP U.S. history will help me for college.

yeah i decided against it.

it's an average of 10 hours of work a week.
& tests are hard.

my point of view: not worth it.
i hope i made teh right decision.

Colleges look for students that take the most challenging courseload possible. Stanford, in particular, is looking for intellectual vitality.

At my sons' school, if you are going to take only one AP class, APUSH is the one. It is pretty standard.

APUSH is one of the hardest AP classes at my kids high school. I don't advise taking it unless you are truly interested in history. There is at minimum 60 pages of reading per week. If you love math and science take those AP's instead.

My son's best friend skipped it and got into Pomona ED.

APUSH is different everywhere, at my school it is taught by a really cool guy, who everyone likes, so it'll probably be awesome, however at your school it could be taught by the 70 year old hold out who is still waiting for tenure even though it's a high school and they don't give tenure :P

It depends entirely on the teacher. APUSH used to be a class that wasn't overly challenging at my high school. Now it's pretty hard because there was a change in teachers.

Basically, if you're not sure, ask your guidance counselor.

Well i am in AP US History right now and it is one of the most hardest classes i hace ever taken. i am taking it online through northwest university, and i have to read at least 4 chapters a week ( 1 unit) and take an assessment over the materical. AP US history is a interesting class, but i would advise you to take it if you love to read.

APUSH was the first AP class I took (in 11th grade) and it was challenging for me in the beginning because history isn't a strong point of mine, but I thought well its American history---how bad could it REALLY be?

Yeah. It was bad.

At first. It took awhile to get use to writing those DBQ's and Essays and the READING, wow. Got a C first marking period, a B the second, and A's the last two marking periods and a 5 on the exam. You really get used to the work load actually, and this is coming from someone who still isn't a big fan of history courses.

@Zamzam--don't you hate that? My one research paper of the entire year was due (of course) the exact same day as my show opened this fall. Sorry. Really felt the desire to whine about that. Essay + show week = death. (of course, the same thing'll happen in college, just because I complain about it so much).

ANYWAY, back onto the real topic. It definitely depends on the teacher. My APUSH teacher is one of the best at our school, so taking the class is 100% worth it. It is kinda a lot of work because you have to learn to write a "History-friendly" essay, which was a challenge for a florid writer like me. But if you have a good teacher, the workload should be a little reading-intensive, but not too bad, and your teacher should be able to teach you some pretty useful skills with the DBQs and stuff.

Also, from an admissions perspective, if you can take what your counselor considers to be the most challenging courseload at your school without it, it probably won't make THAT big of an impact, although it would look nice. If you need it to take the most challenging courseload at your school, then it'll be a boost to your app.

APUSH is my fave class. take it. it really gives you a solid base and foundation in u.s. history and lets you view American culture in a whole new light. its really hard but really worth it.
