Arabs and URM (Not a Chances Thread)

Just out of curiosity, how are Arab-American applicants viewed? There are hardly any Arabic students at Harvard, but I don't know if they are considered a URM.

I'm willing to bet most Arabs checked the "Other" box when applying; for some reason, there is no "Middle-Eastern" race option. (I guess either the Government classifies them as Whites or believes they simply don't deserve their own race class).

URM= African American, Native American and, depending on the college, all Hispanic Americans or some categories of Hispanic Americans (such as Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans, which have very low rates of college attendance).

"Middle Eastern" is not a race. It is an ethnic group. I have no idea whether it is considered underrepresented in college compared to their proportions in the US population.

I don't see any reason why Arabs should get their own racial group. Frankly, I wish that we weren't categorizing anyone by race as there is only one race: human. If only society treated people as if we were all part of one humanity.

Joker, I checked the white box!

I think that it is a little demeaning to say that Arabs should not have their own group. Asians have their own group, Pacific Islanders even have their own group. Yet Arabs who greatly share the same language, religion, and history should not be granted with their own category?

I refused to check any on the race boxes....

I hate that people still categorized people, we should have a system based on merit and the race issue should be banned from the admission process

UBerk tried that for one or two years. It was a disaster. The sad thing is that many say that they wish that URM status wasn't an issue but when they stop getting scholarships and acceptances that they most likely would have gotten with the URM status, they throw a fit.

what about purrsians (lol.. err)

I usually checked off other or asian...

asians only include(indians and pakis and keep going to the east)I think there should be a MiddleEastern box for such cases

According to the school system, Persians fall under Asians. Which once again I think is a joke because in one respect they catagorize you according to "race" sometimes "ethnicity" and now here we go with geography . . .
