ArchE or Civil Eng

Hi everyone. Im a hs senior planning to apply to Cal Poly for ED this year. I really want to apply for the ArchE program b/c it seems more intresting to me (especially since the first ever major i wanted to do was architecture). However, after reading many posts about the ArchE program and talking to the chair of the program @ Cal Poly, I heard that the major is the hardest major on campus to get into. With my freshman year gpa holding me down, I don’t know if my gpa is high enough for the major. (3.88 W). And because i heard Cal Poly doesnt really look at upward trends or anything like that (correct me if im wrong please, i heard they just look at the gpa and rank you by that) Im kinda in a tough situation. The only thing that might save me is a hopefully 30-33 ACT score (if that is even enough). So, as a solution, I was thinking of applying for the Civil Engineering major instead since i can always just take CE and focus on structural (this is what i plan on doing for most UCs b/c they dont have an ArchE program) . Also as a pro , i looked at the grad. status reports online and it says that the avg CE graduates make more than ArchE graduates. (according to those who responded to surveys). My question is : Does this switch seem logical ? and will it make a difference in my app. process b/c CE is slightly easier to get into than ArchE ?

Thanks guys for taking your time to read this post :] please reply!

Hey! I’m going to be a freshman at Poly this fall and my major is ArcE. I applied ED and got in. My stats were lower than yours too. I had a 3.78 gpa weighted, 27 ACT, 1790 SAT. I did take AP classes relating to my major (physics & calc 1). I HIGHLY reccomend doing ED, because you get to apply for housing earlier  and you don’t have months of anxiety over whether or not you got in. I’d say, if you want to do sturctural, then do arcE. Just be sure when you choose a major that its what you want to do. I wouldnt pick a major, just for the sake of improving your odds of getting in, which I think are great anyways. I hear that its rather difficult to change your major. Not only that, but it puts you behind, and its costly. All of my classes this quarter are specific to my major, they’re not GE’s. Because of the “upside-down” curriculum, it seems like it be a pain in the ass to try and switch majors. So anyways… sorry for the lengthy response. I hope it helps you out. :)

OH! and Poly is amazing… good choice. :D

haha lengthy response is good :] and its really great to know that i have a higher chance (than i thought) of getting in . ill def. do ed… thanks for response!!!
