What are the colleges offering the top archeology programs?

Chicago, Michigan-Ann Arbor and Penn.

Chicago would not make the very top echelon of archaeology programs; the big four are Arizona, Berkeley, Michigan, and Penn. I hesitate slightly to include Michigan because its offerings have floundered of late, but it has traditionally been strong and continues to be so on the anthropological side of things. Losing its two star classical archaeologists to Brown was a heavy blow.

snoopydog1, it would help to know what aspect of archaeology you are interested in. Many universities concentrate in either “Old World” (found in classical and near eastern studies departments) or “New World” archaeology (found in anthropology departments), with relatively few having strength in both areas.

Nevertheless, here’s a list to help you get started.

Arizona
Arizona State
Berkeley
Brown
Chicago
Cornell
Duke
Harvard
Johns Hopkins
Michigan
NYU
Penn
Penn State
Princeton
UCLA
UCSB
UNC Chapel Hill
UT Austin
UVA
WUStL
Yale

Bryn Mawr
Colgate
Dickinson
Franklin & Marshall
Haverford
Oberlin
Wesleyan

If your stats are low for these colleges, consider Lycoming in Pennsylvania. It has William Dever on staff, whom Chicago and Michigan would fight to the death to have.

Oh, and Boston U as well. I am embarrassed that I forgot it earlier.

I am interested in Classical archeology, that of Ancient Greece and Rome. I really like Bryn Mawr, and I feel I have strong chance of getting it as well, which is always nice. Thanks for that list, it helps!

Haverford or Bryn Mawr would be an excellent choice.

Although the department (which is outstanding) is housed at Bryn Mawr, many Haverford students choose the major as well. Through the cooperative arrangement between the two schools, they have intentionally divideed up certain disciplines (archaeology, art history, geology, and others at BMC and fine art, music, religion, and others at Haverford).

If you are male, Haverford is your only option. If you are female, you could apply to both.
