Archetypal vs. Unique

LOL Same here

haha, I didn’t see archetypal either.

I put unique.

I put unique because it clearly fit. I think ETS wanted us to put archetypical. In fact, I did pause because unique was awfully easy for the last question.

i ask you to look at archetypal’s definition.

"1. the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form; prototype. "

My reasoning is that modern conflicts may in fact be unique, but they are definitely not the original basis for all future conflicts.

BTW, there was a lot of debate over the October CR answers. I got zero wrong. Humorous, industry, and irreverent were all answers.

I honestly think unique fits better than archetypal.

BTW, I got all CR questions in June right.

^ That definition only further cements my belief that archetypal is wrong.

it’s unique…

“My reasoning is that modern conflicts may in fact be unique, but they are definitely not the original basis for all future conflicts”

The sentence clearly said that those issues have been going on since the dawn of time, so they are not new, or unique.

The sentence said something like, “Conflicts of ideas have been going on for generations, so to think that today’s conflicts are _____ would be naive”.

Archetypal doesn’t really make sense to me…

lol so maybe not so much a controversial question =)

You guys got it wrong. Today’s conflicts are UNIQUE in that they are separate from those of the past, but they aren’t archetypal because they aren’t the first conflicts ever(their basis is in the past.)

also: archetypal and unique both mean “original” so they are not opposites

Just because they aren’t archetypal doesn’t mean that word fits the sentence… they also aren’t jubilant or loquacious…

“Unique” actually fits the sentence at hand

archetypal means “without precedent”

The sentence can really be rephrased as “Blahblah has a lot of historical precedents, so you would be stupid to say that it is without precedent.”

Unique means “unusual”

The sentence can be rephrased to say “Blah has been happening all the time forever, so you would be naive to say it is unusual”

Still makes sense.

Sorry, but this debate is lopsided. The answer is unique.

Meh…the debate over derisive and humorous was lopsided last month, with very few people agreeing with humorous. The answer ended up being humorous. Not that it really matters, though, as -1 is 800

what is the CR curve most probably going to be?..-3?

possibly -3. but count on -2

so the general concensus is that this was hard? thats good, because I got the same amount of questions wrong on this one than my last, which had a harsher curve. -6 on may had 720, im hoping for a 740.

my guess of curve:

-2 800
-3 780
-4 760
-5 750
-6 730
-7 710
-8 700

but im probably being too generous for my sake haha

i thought the march 08 reading was meh
but the curve was actually pretty tough
i got -3 740

your curve is too optimistic :P
