My son is interested in a design major. This program at UC Boulder looks awesome. He seems to be leaning more toward Industrial Design or possible Architecture. Wondering if he could still go the Industrial Design route if he attends Boulder, or would have to choose Architecture.
Arch and indust. design are very different - one is designing buildings and the other products (cars, phones, etc). These degrees at any college will likely be in separate depts and do not ‘mix’. The degree at Boulder is a pre-professional, 4 yr arch degree that will require a masters, as a typical arch degree at a university is 5 yrs. I do not believe Boulder has an indust design degree.
@roforillo There are four main majors that teach design at CU Boulder, including in some degrees, industrial design:
- Atlas Institute is run by a creative architecture professor Mark Gross, who is also appointed in computer science, see the design majors here: https://www.colorado.edu/atlas/academics http://mdgross.net/
- There is an architectural engineering degree that teaches building and lighting design: https://www.colorado.edu/ceae/prospective-students/undergraduate-studies/architectural-engineering
- Landscape and urban design is also taught in the Environmental Design major: https://www.colorado.edu/academics/programs/environmental-design
- Product design is taught in mechanical engineering: https://www.colorado.edu/mechanical/
Its much harder to get admitted to the College of Engineering, than it is to get a degree in Environmental Design or any degree at the Atlas Institute, which is a combination of art, media and computer science or mechanical design.
The CU Boulder Atlas Institute is similar to the MIT Media Lab.
