Architecture at Notre Dame

I am just wondering if any of the students who are currently in the architecture program can tell me a little bit about the program and what they think of it. I am a sophomore in High School, and I am fairly sure that I will be applying to either the School of Architecture or something involving the humanities. I would really appreciate any information you can provide me with in regards to the school of architecture. Thanks!

i am not a current student, but I basically applied into ND’s school of architecture, and have spent a day on campus and meet with classes that deal with architecture.

ND is a traditional architecture school. Focus is on Roman architecture, etc, and not modern architecture (this does not mean that no modern architects have come from ND though, the focus is on traditional arch). This maybe a problem for some, but is great for those who want to learn the basic rules of architecture.

Unlike most arch. programs which start studio first year and have an extremely compact schedule starting from 1st semester, ND does things a little different. First year is basically to get a foundation and take general ed classes (with some classes like drawing, arch. history worked in). Second year starts studio and a more involved arch. study. Third year is spent in Rome!! It is an amazing experience for what I am told and is great in terms of learning the traditional arch. Fourth year is using the things you learned in Rome and fifth year is basically a major thesis or project.

ND does have a 5 yr BArch which is accredited

Submitting a portfolio is not required, but I would suggest it especially if you spend along time on it. It makes your application more unique.

hopes this helps a little.

That was very thorough, thanks very much for your reply!

Anyone know about Notre Dame’s job placement for MArch students. I am curious.

I would highly recommend becoming proficient doing watercolor washes in the Beaux Arts tradition.
The year in Rome will be one of the best of your life.
