Architecture Dual Degree

I am interested in the Dual Architecture/Architectural Engineering 6-year program at UT. I read on their website that only about 95 students are admitted each year into the entire school of architecture, so I'm assuming that very few get into the dual degree program.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience in this program. I also want to know my chances of being admitted.
I know they are slim because my grades aren't the best, nor is my class rank (I'm not in the top 8%/12 kids who will be automatically admitted to UT), but I do have very strong test scores, and my math and science grades are pretty solid.

What does it take to get into this program? And if I were to be accepted, what is it like? Basically any info regarding it will be very welcome and appreciated, thanks!!

I can’t tell you much, but I was an Arch E major many years ago. I knew exactly ONE person my entire time at Texas who was a dual major. He was brilliant and talented. Even for him, it was incredibly challenging. The combination of lots of hard engineering work plus design studios is hard to describe!

This is an educated guess, but I think your rank is going to keep you out of the program. Arch E by itself is THE hardest engineering program to get into, and architecture is also almost impossible to get into. I’m afraid they would not want someone with less than stellar grades, because they know it would be hard for you to succeed.

I would suggest you call up the Arch E department and talk to someone. My dad is one of the profs, and I know he’s always willing to talk to prospective students.

Sorry to be harsh, but I thought I needed to be honest.

Don’t do it. Lol.

I was in the program but dropped the engineering part for just architecture. There were two other people out of the 74 of us that were in the arch school the year I started that was doing dual so three total. The other guy dropped the architecture part and went for the pure arch E and the other girl is still in architecture but I am not sure if she is still in the engineering part.

Just looking at the degree plan there is no way in hell you can do architecture with that course load of engineering stuff unless you have NO life ie willing to do all-nighters every night of the week, and are awesome at math/science naturally. Architecture alone sucks up ALL of your time. All of it.

I would seriously just pick one or the other. Seriously.

Btw, I was not in the top 10% of my class and made it into the dual program. I think my test scores (I took the ACT) are what got me in.

Thanks so much for both of y’all’s advice. I guess I would be getting in a little over my head, especially if I decide to rush. Setphaserstostun (btw love the tbs allusion), how do you like the architecture school at UT? What is it like? And, if you don’t mind me asking, what was your ACT score? I’m not in the top 10%, but I do test really well, so I’m banking on my test scores for any hope of getting in haha
