Architecture program

My son is a first year Architecture student at Buffalo and I never realized how much time they spend in the studio. It seems like there is never any free time as an Architecture student. Can someone who knows about the program shed some light as to what is involved, why they spend so much time, is it project after project? It just seems like he is not getting any sleep. He has been sick already but could not take care of himself because he had to be in the studio. Is it like this the whole year or do they just try and see who can make it. Any information would be helpful. Thanks. Deb

I do know that one of my kids had a friend who graduated from the architecture program a year ago. His friend worked crazy hours the whole time that he was in school. They retained their friendship from freshman year in the dorm. My kid has joked that he never would have met his friend later, since his friend spent the rest of his college experience working in the studio. Even my kid in pharmacy at SUNY Buffalo thinks the architecture program is one of the hardest majors.

My kids always get sick after returning to school, just like preschoolers or elementary school kids. Living in close proximity to so many other students, not getting enough sleep, and meeting people from all over (being exposed to new viruses!) all come into play. One of my kids is a fan of sanitizer, and uses it constantly. Another kid is a fan of vitamin supplements. Either way, I now send each of them off with a kit with cold meds, kleenex, immodium, pepto bismol, aleve and tea/honey tubes. No matter how much they say that they don’t need it, I guarantee each one of them will use their kit by October.
