Architecture vs. Architectural Engineering?

I know I want to study something related to architecture; I'm just not sure if I want to be an architect or an architectural engineer. Could someone maybe clarify the differences?

From what I've heard or read, it seems like the main difference is that architects deal with more of the aesthetics, whereas architectural engineers deal with more of the mathematics of building. Is that correct?

Lastly, it seems like a lot of colleges require a portfolio of artwork/designs before you can be admitted as an undergrad architecture student. I don't have any experience with architecture and I'm a senior this year... is that a problem? I've taken drafting and completed all my math and science requirements, but I've never actually designed anything. I've always thought that that's what I would learn to do in college...

If someone could help clarify that, too, i would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

You are correct on architectural engineering vs architecture. Architecture deals with the design, usage of space, aesthetics, etc. Architectural engineering majors study the structural design, MEP (mechanical / electrical / plumbing) design of buildings.

Colleges typically prefer for you to not submit architectural pieces for your portfolio. Usually they ask for just general artwork to show your talent and artistic ability. After all, an architect is really an artist that designs buildings.

Thank you  Do you think it’s important to have a background with art before going to college? I’m concerned because I can’t say I’ve really created any artwork outside of my design classes at school… which didn’t have too impressive a curriculum.
