Architecture vs Engineering - or both?

<p>By the way, for all that are reading this:</p>

<p>How in the world does one keep their motivation?</p>

<p>I mean we are all looking for a very well paying job (engineering), but some of us are looking for something that we can actually express ourselves in and be creative (architecture).</p>

<p>Can you please give some ideas as to what will motivate someone who is worried about the future after college?? </p>

<p>(Hopefully thecheeseitman will benefit from this too if he is still looking for answers, or anyone else for that matter.)</p>

<p>i think your example is a fact</p>

<p>'The best architects were actually mathematicians. One big example: Pythagoras. ‘Nuff said.’</p>

<p>Sorry, but I don’t think so. Certainly not in the last 100 years. Calatrava is the only recent one that comes to mind.</p>

<p>If you want to major in math or engineering for undergrad, then go get an March, then by all means do so. Just don’t think it’s going to make you a better architect. Given where the professions are right now you will be forced to choose whether to be an architect or an engineer. You can get both degrees and wait till after graduation to decide, or just pick one as a major and stick with it.</p>

I’d say architecture. It’s more about design of the framework. The math is a bit easier-more on the geometry/trig side. Engineering requires good math intellect & diligence with some engineering extending far beyond the calculus. Engineering courses are harder-lots of calc, abstract math, physics, fluid hydraulics, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics. This stuff is quite deep to read-imagine the computational problems. Architecture would strike the eye as intriguing because it allows you to study distinct time periods & materials. You would also get some exposure by examining architecture from an art history point of view plus some new innovative designs of buildings, bridges, monuments, fountains, etc.

I am a senior Architecture student and I am also graduated from the department of Mechanical Engineering in the beginning of last year from same university as a double major. I want to find a master programme that i can combine my mechanical engineering and architecture. Can you give me reccoandation for that stiuotion?

Does anyone have any new info about this topic? I am getting ready to start applying to colleges and am stuck between architecture, civil engineering, or architectural engineering. I love the math and science side of it but also the artistic and design side. Stuck. Any info would be appreciated.

I’d suggest that you sign up for a summer “career in architecture” course to get a better idea of what architecture is all about. Barring that, visit a few schools of architecture and see if the Bachelor of Architecture curriculum and the students’ work draw you in.

A 5.0 year BArch is a fairly significant commitment for a high school student. Architecture schools are aware of this and go to great lengths to provide information to potential students. Take advantage of it. If you’re still unsure, you could consider getting a BA or BS in architecture, math, science or whatever interests you, then head to graduate school for a Master of Architecture (or not).
