Architecture

I was just wondering, who is all applying to Cornell's Arch school?

and also a general question: how much harder is it to get into the architecture program than compared to getting into the other schools?

me am. is you?

it's very tough, my gf is a student in the architecture school now. I believe the yield ratio is very high, so very few students are accepted. The freshmen class for architecture majors is about 60 students.

gomestar, if you and your girlfriend don't mind, what were her stats and what did she have in her portfolio?

bneg, i'm applying to it, but it is one of my reach schools.
(oh and about my grammar mistake - it happens... but thankfully not on sat days)

ai~ didn't me to make fun of you, i was just in the mood for baby talking! let me find a link for you regarding stats...

<a href="http://www.icsd.k12.ny.us/highschool/studserv/CollegeProfile2004.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.icsd.k12.ny.us/highschool/studserv/CollegeProfile2004.pdf</a></p>

here it is!

Freshman Arch class is closer to 110. 60 women...so perhaps thats' the stat Gomestar was quoting.

Here's the data source:

<a href="http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/pdf/FactBook/Admissions/Undergraduate/Freshmen/aap.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/pdf/FactBook/Admissions/Undergraduate/Freshmen/aap.pdf</a></p>

wharf - that's for the entire AAP school - includes art majors, urban planning (or whatever it's called) as well as architecture. I'll get her stats later on tonight...

ok, menosdetres, she was top 5% of high school, just under 1400 SAT (i forget the exact score), 97 out of 100 GPA. Portfolio was quite amazing - last time i knew, the admissions office had it on display as a 'reference' for prospective archies. It only had maybe one or two actual architecture drawings, the rest was artworks in the form of various paintings, drawings, sketches, etc. She had it professionaly done to make it all look good (was expensive, maybe $250). She was also accepted to Pratt, Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon, SUNY Buffalo if that means anything.

wow thanks guys, this is really helpful!

is there any place that you all know where I can get examples of prospective arch portfolios? I'm working on mine right now and am confused of whether I should focus on one or two mediums or show my breadth with lots of different ones.

i would have to say talk to admissions, that's where they put my gf's.

search "portfolio" in the super long architecture thread; from what i remember there are only 3 sources available. regarding media, i'm guessing that they are not looking at *fine art technique, but sketching/design ability and maybe also some 3D thing just because~

I'm not sure if this is the place to put it... but do you think the cornell arch program is within in reasonable reach with:

-a 4.0 uw (weighted 4.4 i think)

-a sat score of 2170 (740m,730v,700w) - 2220 if using the highest of all scores (sat 2 in nov, hopefully 700+)

-an average portfolio
here's a sample: <a href="http://twoplustwoisfive.deviantart.com/%5B/url%5D">http://twoplustwoisfive.deviantart.com/</a>
there's only a few since I started the deviantart thing just yesterday but I would love to have some critiques of what I do have though!

i find your portfolio and stats really similar to those of Jimminy's, and he had a very happy ending - accepted to many top schools including cornell. How long does it take you to complete one piece? If you work fast and your other pieces have the same quality, you will most likely end up like him too!! but keep in mind he has the super impressive 3D piece at the end . by the way, self portrait, crumpled piece of paper, corner of a room - you're following directions of certain schools correct?

wow seeing that I may actually have a slight chance makes me feel pretty happy... hehe.

and it doesn't take me very long if it's charcoal or graphite... anything with color takes a little more time though. i know wash u wants the paper, the room, and a shoe, so i figured maybe cornell would like the same. i do have others that I plan to use, but i haven't uploaded/taken pictures of them yet.

what other schools are you applying to?

bneg: the website that you linked, what is that?

hopeful: that is the stats/admission decision thingies of a grad class. pretty interesting right!! I forgot who put this up (it was originaly in the cornell forum as well), but i would like to thank him/her here!

menosdestres: I used to think that arch. programs will be more interested in "design" and not just "art", but after seeing various sources i think it comes down to simply how yours compares with others. although the techniques you've shown in "sleeping" are already obvious in other pieces, it is an exceptionally strong piece that will definitely stand out!!

i'm going for cooper, U cin, mcgill, IIT....hopefully i don't end up anywhere else.
