Architecture?

anyone planning to study architecture?

Me.I am gonna to apply Cooper Union(5 years), Cornell(5),Yale(4), Princeton(4), and MIT (4)two years later.I love architecture so much!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am applying to Princeton, Yale, Cornell, WU, Penn, IIT, USC.

Have you done your interview at cornell? How was your portfolio like?

I said two years later!!!!But I have a portfolio of some kinds of drawing, models, and photography stuff. I also have great rec letters from 3 professors at USC. One of the professors said the only question you need to think about is"what is architecture?" And I thought that's the toughest one. Don't worry about your portfolio so much because 95%of them are a piece of junk. BTW, USC is not as nice as I thought, the safety is a big problem there, and the dorms there are not as comfortable as the other schools like HYPs' (their dorms are awesome). Only 7% of applicants will get accepted at USC,and Cornell and Cooper Union are even worse. Anyway, if those schools can take me into Harvard GSD, I will doing anything to achieve my goals. Keep contact with me, if you have any questions about applying those schools. Remember, be yourself is more than anything else, architecture schools are looking for passionate, talented, and dedicated individuals.I think we have diiferent problems since I am an international student. I am not sure about the other schools, but USC will offer me full scholarship for sure, they called me "the rare individuals" and I had done a good job there last summer. However Cornell, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Cooper Union seems more attractive to me. What is your situation, tell me more about yourself.
Wendi(that's my real name)

hello fallingwater. (my real name is Jimi) I am also an international student.

Thanks for giving me a lowdown on USC. I used to think it was such a great place. But another international sophomore at IIT said the academics are terrible and the people are so ugly. Anyway, i saw the dorm pictures and i guess they weren't so great.

RIght now, I really don't know where to go. I will get into HYPPenn for sure but I don't know how much aid i will get. I am sure of full scholarhsip at USC and IIT though. BUt I think Yale and Princeton are better places and I am not still so sure about Cornell. I did not apply for aid because the deadline was Jan1 and the forms were so confusing. Does Cornell just give scholarships without applying for aid?

I sent in a file portfolio to USC and Cornell, and CDs to Yale and Princeton and IIT. Ther is only one full-tuition scholarship in archtiecture in WUSTL and they want slides but i've not sent the in yet and the deadline was Jan15. I couldn't find a place to do slides over here. I don't know if they will still accept any late submissions.

Also, I need a schol where I can develop my other interests. I hear that Cornell is so focussed and all that. I am also very interested in music, maths, and engineering.

Thanks. What are you doing now? Are still in school or you're doing A-level classes or what? And what country are you from?

sorry, how's University of Miami's architecture program like?

Hi, Jrock, let me answer your last 3 questions.I am taking the toughest schedule at my school, participating an SAT prep course, self-studying AP world History, Bio, Euro. History, and Human Geography aside of my regular school works. I am a Chinese girl who've been US for 2 years. Interviews at any colleges count alot, even at HYPSM,and Cornell. I heard that the scholarships at HYP are non-merit based, which means, they are not determine on your academic records, so be relaxed. Wow, you will get into HYP? That's so amazing. Do you mean you can get into all of them? That must be a miracle. If your portfolio is outstanding, you should send it to HYP as well, I think that can make a big difference since I had never heard any applicant could be both excellent academically and artistically. I know nothing about University of Miami, the weather there is gorgeous, just like Southern California, which is where I am currently live in. It seems like you are also good at singing, playing musical instruments or so? I recommened you to chose Yale as the first chioce, because they have a good music program as well, the academic atmosphere is very friendly. Or you can chose Princeton, their math and engineering programs are respectable. You saw the movie <<beautiful mind="">>, right? It based on a true story happened at Princeton. You will love their brilliant faculty and students, my uncle said Princeton is very strong on math and engineering, he dreamed to be there but ended at Caltech. What is really special about Yale is that you can design your own major, an inter-discplinary major or double majors. Frankly, I always want to go to HYP, but it seems almost impossible, although I am unique, good at anything else, except my ECs.Take my advice, I hope you can go to the best place for you. Best whishes.
Wendi</beautiful>

You must be extremely smart, self-studying for APs. Thanks for your advice.
So you live in SC. That's great.
Yeah, I play classical piano, guitar and keyboard (self-taught on all). I sent in a music composition to my schools. And I got a cool rec from my music teacher.

You're the next person to recommend Yale. How do I apply for aid at Yale? Princeton has an online Fin aid application. Penn has a form. But what about Yale?

Thanks. And good luck in your APs. I am also self-studying for A-levels. I think they're sort of equivalent?

All the best anyway!!
Jimi.

Hey, so what are your skills and abilities? And your ECs? (they do not really have to be a laundry list. The schools are more concerned about how committed you are to a responsibility than how many trades you're a jack of)

so you mean i can't do double-majors at any of the other schools i've listed.

Hey this sounds ridiculous, but is it possible?
i wanna do three or two majors and three minors?

where is this possible?

sorry Fallingwater,( are you an FLW freak?)

so what's the bottomline of your advice?
where should i go?

thank you so much

Cornell is an exception. Do you konw how tough that program is? You will have no freedom at all!!!!!!!!!!!! My ECs are modest, although I am EXTREMELY smart, I hate to work with stupid people, which are the people around me. I read tons of books in last few years, and took one year off after I graduated from elementary school. I spend all my times on reading, writting, meditations and drawing, my whole life is about the word "isolation", I don't communicate with people at my school normally, because we are live in the different worlds. It is glad to meet you at CC, at least I know there are bunch of genius right here. My skills include read a 300 pgs book in 2 hours(is that count?), model making, writting elegantly in both Chinese and English, interpretating, and observing people accurately(this counts as an intangible quality). I used to be a weirdo, still I am.Yes, I am a FLW freak, I read his 1200 pages autobiography during the period I took off school. I actually went to Fallingwater once----the most beautiful architecture I had ever seen. My aspiration is to become the best female architect in the world, and a great educator who can change the architecture educational system in China. Sentimental and sensitive, I wrote thousands of poems in both Chinese and English, but I finally decided to burn all of them!!! I know it is insane, compares to Keats and Dickenson, it's nothing. Well, you are the ivies wanted person, and I am not. My personality is the biggest issue here that will destroy my future. Do you think Harvard Summer School will accept me as a freaky weirdo?( my classmates called me that). Waiting for your answer.
Wendi

The bottomline of my advice is that you 'd better go to Harvard, they will probaly letting you design your own majors, since you interested in lots areas. You know, I always want to be there, and my SAT teacher's stats extinguished my fantasy. He is a newly Harvard Undergraduate with distinction, and got deferred at both Harvard and Yale Law School, he's the only person I knew so far got both perfect scores on SATs and GRE. A such great person like this ended up at Oxford, what about me? Totally hopeless! Chose either Yale or Harvard, I think Harvard might be better for your situation. Yale will talk about your Finaincial Aid Package later, they usually talk with you about that after you got accepted, that's what my SAT sub said(a Yale graduate).

Now Fallingwater0328 (your birthday's probably March 28)

No one is stupid. Everyone's a genius in a special way.

Now, your personality can never destroy your future.

You're not a weirdo. In fact, you sound an interesting person to me. Well I quite understand your isolation. It happened to me to. Everyone thought my case was a hopeless one.

Sure Harvard will take you for Summer School. You sound like Harv-material.

Great talents you've got. I bet i could read 450pages/hour.

Good language flexibility. But get another one.

I speak, write and read three - Eng, French and Yoruba (native lang). Learning German currently.

Sorry, Harvard doesn't offer architecture. Anyway, thanks for your input. You have a great personality. Don't give a hoot about what others think. Try to mix a little though. You just might find someone. Get into your community more and do something for the people, whether great or small. Commit yourself to a particular responisibility and concentrate on that.

Hey, on the whole, FLW, I think you're amazing. Make your dreams!!

Harvard has a major called history of art and architecture, which is I am looking forward, especially, one of their thesis topics is Chinese Architecture, my beloved interest.Another advantage at Harvard is that you can enroll architecture courses at MIT, or Wellsley(if you are a girl). In your Junior year, you can study abroad at either Cambridge, or Oxford( I prefered Cambridge, thier architecture program is No.1 in UK). I am sure you will pursuing an advanced degree, Harvard's Graduate Schooll of Design ranked No.1 in US, you must maximize your possibilities to be there, and Harvard College education is the best of all. I could tell you Architect Edward Barnes was an example who got his A.B. from Harvard college and then attend GSD. To develop your broad interests, Harvard is a good place to go. Trust me.

I need your advice now, French or German, which is more useful for an architecture student? I have no time to take them both. I only like to talk with elder people, and hold an intership at an engineering company, that's the best part of my high school experience. I don't think a demanding architecture program fits you very well. A four year or a five year program will affect your next stage of life alot.

Yes, my birthday is March 28, have you got admitted from any of your listed schools? Have you applied one of them as an EA or ED?

Hello Wendi

Sorry I have not been online for quite a while.

If you don't have time, I'll advise you to study French. It's very easy to learn. German would have been nice, but it's much more complicated, especially in pronunciation. You'll need more time for it.

Anyway I have been accepted at Illinois Inst of Tech, and I've also been invited for the full-tuition scholarship interview in February. I applied EA to Miami but haven't heard from them since. Anyway, I am still considering architecture but I guess I'll have the chance to diversify when I get there.

I also like to talk with older people. They have a lot of great advice and experience. Try to link up with someone in the Arch Studies dept at Harvard. I am not so interested in that particular major. It's more of theory.

Anyway, I'll see you later.

Bye,
Jimi.

hey, thanks cama,

your post is actually getting me more in love with cornell. i don't really know where i want to end up, but cornell sent me their brochure, and man, it's a cool place. anyway, we'll see what April 1 brings...

Jrock, don't go to Cornell, since your interests are very broad. Cornell will narrow you down, you will have no opportunity to learn anything except architecture. And the grade deflation there sounds horrible. It is a school easy to get in, hard to get out----- only 60% of those architecture major received their diploma.

60%?! What happens to the rest?

Fallingwater, do you understand the 5 yr. vs 4+2 yr. choice?
