Thanks a lot to jcro and bneg for the comprehensive information, and sorry for the late reply.

I didn't know that the different kinds of programs matter a lot...hmm I'll have to do more research ...!
I really wanna go to somewhere far..like east coast, but financially it is better to stay in California.
Jcro: As for SLO, I think I have a really small chance to get in there cuz my SAT scores aren't that great (I think math SAT score is a big deal). I also heard that they only accept very few people (well, a lot of arch schools are...same thing with rice?)..but slo doesn't even accept portfolio/essay/interview, so their admissions is strictly based on academic records...T_T haha.. but we'll see...

Jcro and bneg, what school do you really want to get into?

i want the most affordable one that I've applied to: i think it could be mcgill, but i don't think i have too good a chance there. whree have you applied arabesque?

I applied to arch programs at UC Berkeley, cal poly, cooper union (don't really wanna do it anymore--> home test although they havent arrived), rice, cornell, ut austin, and usc. My mom really wants me to go to usc, i guess cuz it's close to home ;) I went there for the summer (exploration of arch 2005) it was an unforgettable experience, although I'd like to live in another state ..and maybe if I can get into cornell...I'll join my sister there. I guess usc isn't one of the best schools for arch... but a lot of architects in cal are familiar with usc students.

If I go to school in Cal, I'll be eligible for the cal grant (up to $8,000). Everything really depends on the financial aid and scholarships I can get.

bneg, have you apply for fafsa and css profile? also, where do you apply to?

wow 8000 is a lot....i can see why you want to stay in cal!! just yesterday i used a princeton early estimator and it turned out to be even more affordable than mcgill, which is, in Montreal Canada (and I am Canadian; sososos excited!! I love the states!! Have you seen the show daisy does america?). It has a 5.5 year m.arch professional program (a weird one in terms of duration), and if you have advanced credit for chem/phys/calc, you can skip first year and the program becomes 4.5 years for a professional degree. Pros: really cheap compared to american u's, but you have the cal grant, so....I'm not really sure. and short (4.5 years). and good rep in states. cons: might be hard to get into grad school because canadian u's sometimes give GPA's that don't really reflect student's ability (generally less flexible and mostly likely there's no such thing as grade inflation; of course, these are all general opinions).

As a Canadian, I have no idea what to do....i can't find enough info from princeton, but i suppose as long as i send everything things should turn out okay right?? I don't know whhat to do with the schools that give no fin aid to intl. applicants....maybe there's no point in submitting FAFSA and CSS to them?? I don't know, i might just send it to everyone. BUt do you know what I should do?? If I could get an answer here that would save a lot of time and that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hey y'all, checkin in here...
i got my letter from UMiami a few days ago! admission to the university + admission to school of architecture + merit scholarship, exciting! I also heard (positively) from arizona's honors program, which was good news so i've actually got a choice hehe it doesnt get much better than that (and either way, i'll be warm)! I get Rice news in about a week and by the end of the month my three rolling too, Calpoly, Hawaii, and Roger Williams. Forget Harvard and Princeton, man... i just had an interview with a Harvard alumn and it was awful - he was a total jerk/snob

so guys, ivies are overrated. its not even that much of a better education than the best honors colleges at state schools - (ie the UCs, UTs and UMasses and the list goes on) especially in architecture - save it for going to grad school there... and juniors, count on changing your mind about a million times, i can relate! ok, ill stop the older and wiser lame lecture routine but goood luckkkk!

"so guys, ivies are overrated." Yep! actually, except for cornell they are not even rated at the undergrad level.

anyway, congrats to Jcro!! You seem to be the first to bring good news~ which one is your first choice by the way? (Did you choose Hawaii for the climate???)

haha, well hawaii does have a pretty sweet climate but thats not why i applied... hawaii's my wildcard cause its like studying in a different country, they excel at cross-cultural studies and i love their asia-pacific-incorporation-style. on that note, no ethnic group is more than 25% of the population so i love the diversity aspect, and to top it off, its the only college in america (and probably the world) with an intense 7 year program where you come out with a doctorate... its really unique

as for first choices, theyre overrated too. haha i have absolutely no clue but i hope i will by the time may 1st rolls around!

Congrats to jcro!! Are you applying for the undergrad/grad? (cuz you said you interviewed with Harvard alum and Harvard doesn't have undergrad arch).

Bneg, did you get letter of acceptance from Cal Poly (did you apply there)?

hey arabesque...
yeah im applying freshman undergrad... if i got into harvard I'd do the liberal arts thing for awhile and probably transfer. did you apply to calpoly? i applied on october 4th regular decision and i still havent heard! infact they just cashed my check last week! arg waiting is so agonizing.

Which cal poly did you apply to? I applied to both slo and pomona. So far I haven't heard back from slo except a confirmation for the online apps. Pomona already sent acceptance letters to the university (not to the architecture program). Maybe it takes longer if it's out-of-state =) (or out or country?) Btw if you applied to pomona and got honors program application, it means that you're accepted to the university.

I am a high school senior about to start college this fall and I have a serious passion for architecture. I applied to a lot of schools and so far I have gotten in to SUNY Buffalo, Wash U in St. Louis, University of Washington, and USC. I also applied to Michigan, UC Berkeley, and Cornell (still waiting to hear responses from all of them).

At this point, I am very inclined to go to USC, partially because it is in Los Angeles (a very happening place to be for budding architects), and partially because it has one of the nation's top programs (or so I am told). However, I am concerned that if I choose USC, I will miss out on a potentially better program offered by Wash U (and possibly UDub (University of Washington)). In addition, my reach and top choice of the moment is Berkeley.

Supposing I don't get in anywhere else at this point, what would be the best choice for me academically and overall? I really want to obtain the best academic experience possible while also being in a location that would be deemed good for students studying architecture. I have no preference to whether I enroll in a 5 or 4+2 program.

you can try pm'ing or emailing Jrock or SRMom on this board, who will be more familiar with those schools. however, I've never heard Udub being mentioned; WashU and USC are most likely better (but USC is probably not a "top" program in the nation).

stcukinarmonk, did you apply to USC and U.Wash in St. Louis for architecture major? I heard that USC will send admission decisions for arch in april (they will start to review portfolio in spring), but they already accepted people to other majors these days.

As for USC and Wash U in St Louis, I heard that Wash U in St Louis is better (academically), but I agree with bneg that you should contact jrock or srmom cuz they know better =)

stuckinarmonk,
the important thing to realize is each school's background... usc definitely has a more modern sway while wustl will give you a more classical arch education. congrats for getting in! if it were me i'd go to usc just because its a 7% acceptance rate! (but im not a big fan of watts...)

Jcro, how did you prepare for your interview at harvard? Did you bring anything/ask any questions? What did they ask? What did you wear!? I totally forgot that princeton has an interview (even though you did mention it), but for the sake of no loans I will attend....but what I am supposed to do? Bring a portfolio?
