Hi, does anyone know what architecture at MIT is like? It seems weird to be so unnoticeable though it's at one of the best schools~

i could try to filter answers from a friend of mine who'll be starting it this fall, or recall what i've seen from other friends who're in it/just graduated...
it strikes me as much like architecture at any program; you're going to spend a lot of time in studio, building models and putting together projects and portfolios. i'll assume there's components of design, probably a bit of materials/mechanics in there, lots of art and drawing and that sort of thing. um, i can't really tell you much more than that, right now, and you'd probably get more from the course homepage. do you have a more specific question?

oh, i have quite a lot of specific questions, but i'm happy to find out just anything~ how tech-oriented is BSAD? is the program as well-kown as others at MIT? what are the 'options' things that are on the sites? is it a lot less competitive than other programs at MIT? or is it still very competitive? is the competitiveness worth it compared to education ones receives and emplyments? do applicants still need to be science geniuses? i think i'll shut up for a while, thank you!

a few things i can answer directly: you need to be a strong enough applicant to get into MIT, since the admissions dept doesn't care about your intended major. the "options" you're thinking of are the various streams that the dept wants you to pick, visual arts, history theory&criticism of art&architecture, building technology, and architectural design. how it compares to other majors at MIT, well, it seems to be a pretty good timesink, since the projects and studio classes will probably take a great deal of non-compressible time (ie, you probably can't shortcut parts of it like you could a pset) it is a small major, but i think most people know it exists. well, unless they're one of those who don't know there's anything beyond 18 and 6 and maybe 8.

as for your other questions, i'll get back to you with word from a friend who recently graduated course IV, hopefully.

Thanks so much~ I am very shocked by the admission process...

Hi! Thank you for your replies, I guess MIT's BSAD is not a professional program for licensing on its own without M.arch, right? If that's true it explains a lot. Thank you very much for all the info! I guess i won't be considering it (or be considered) because of the admissions process among other factors, but thanks once again!
