I am interested in a major in either International Relations or Middle Eastern Studies. I am hoping to attend Wellesley College or a similar LAC, and Wellesley's website says that students often have 4 years of study in a foreign language. However, I would much rather not take Latin next year, as I really don't enjoy it at all, and I have absolutely no interest in it. I would prefer to spend my last year of high school taking a class in something I enjoy, such as Honors Asian and African History, AP US Politics and Government, or AP Economics.

My question is: is not taking 4 years of a foreign language a detriment to one's high school record? I am currently taking Honors Latin IV, and if I were to take Latin next year, it would be AP Latin - Vergil, but I realllly don't want to.

While I cannot speak of Wellesley. Tufts is mainly an International Relations school, and I recently was accepted there ED I as a prospective IR major....and......I only took TWO years of Spanish, gasp, I know....so, it probably won't break you, but you might want to call them, or post this on the Wellesley forums. Good luck!

You completed four years, just not all in HS. It would be different if you had only achieved Latin 3. DS made the same decision because there were other courses he wanted to take as a senior. I think it will work out OK.

A friend was admitted to Wellesley last year (though her prospective major wasn't IR), with two years of high school French (which she could have continued into IB French B) and two years of beginners IB Spanish in her junior and senior year.

I don't think it's a detriment, as you already have years of experience in a second language.

see, i was worried because i'm not doing amazingly well in latin. my semester grades from freshman year on go A, A, A-, B-, B, A-, and i don't want to look like i dropped it because i'm not doing well. it really isn't in my interest though
