Are 8AM classes really THAT bad?

I am planning to join wind ensemble, which means Im gonna have 8AM classes everyday due to schedule conflicts. Are 8AM classes that bad? Should I join wind next semester and avoid morning classes?

It depends on whether you are a morning person or not. Lots of people are not or do not think that they are, but if you do not find getting up early to be a problem, then being willing to take 8am courses can make your scheduling easier (they are less likely to be full).

Whether you live a short walk from campus versus some place where you would have to commute can also matter.

Isn’t that the time at which the normal workday begins?

It depends on your preferences. I tried getting most of my classes in the morning so that I’d be free after 12 pm to do whatever I want and get over my classes ASAP. I know people who want to sleep in and take classes from like 11-4. It’s not really a difference from high school where classes start at 8:20-30. It may be easier for some. What I can say is morning classes are easier to deal with if the first class is something you like.

In short yes. My kid only takes 8am class if the professor is really good and he doesn’t have another session. Most of the time her classes start around 10:00am.

Hey, my first semester also had wind ensemble and 8AM classes every day.

If there is one thing I got out of it, either start your day early and end it early or start your day late and end it late.
I had 2-hour or 3-hour gaps between classes and theoretically that time was meant to study in between, but it didn’t work out.

If you can schedule so that there’s minimum gap between classes besides Monday when you have wind ensemble, then that’s good.

Thank you everyone for your advice! This semester, I will have all 8AM classes, but I’ll see if I like it and maybe change it next semester.

From the one 8 AM class I took and the constant complaints I hear about them, the answer is a definitive “yes”. I remember taking a Friday discussion at 8 AM first semester my freshman year and it was as bad as I thought it would be and more. I hardly went and when I did, I learned absolutely nothing because it took all I had just to keep my eyes open.

Now, hope that sufficiently scared you! If you have 8 AMs every day, then you’ll probably get used to it at some point. Seeing that the vast majority of college students don’t sleep until the ungodly hours of the night, I’ll recommend that you take naps most days just to supplement your night’s sleep (or lack thereof).

Note that some traditional pre-med courses are always at 8am. Traditionally, introductory biology (1A, 1B) are MWF 8-9, while organic chemistry (3A or 112A, 3B or 112B) are TuTh 8-930.
