Are a mattress pad + memory foam topper necessary?

Because my mom refuses to buy them.

It makes your bed much more comfortable than normal. Tell mom that if you can’t sleep well, you won’t concentrate as much on your studies and it will waste her money paying college tuition for you.

They aren’t necessary but that are really nice to have. First off, they make the mattress more comfortable and provide you with a better night’s sleep. Also, they serve as a barrier between you and the actual mattress. You never know who slept on that mattress before you did, and what they did to/on it…

Lol. Then get a cheap one? The only reason my parents wouldn’t buy it is if it cost like more than 40 bucks.

You won’t die if you don’t have one but you’ll want to.

For the perfect bed you need: 1 straight foamy thing about 1 inch deep, 1 egg crate mattress (egg point things down) and 1 soft cotton mattress cover. Put three items down in that order. Be sure to put cotton mattress pad down last to keep from getting the nightsweats. This make the most perfect nights sleep, which is very important to a college student. Well worth the money.

Yes. They’re not too expensive. You can sleep on the uncomfortable mattress and buy them yourself out of your first work study paycheck, if you must. Get them on sale at Target. Your bed is not just your bed - it’s your living room furniture too, so it should be comfortable.

WOW artmommy77 - 4 million total posts? In the last year? My god - is CC your homepage?

No they are not necessary, but it is strongly recommended that you buy one of them.

^^ Yeah, I just noticed her post count too. I thought mine was high.

That can’t be right.

I have a mattress pad… No memory foam. We’d already spent a lot on other things and I didn’t want to make my parent’s pay for the foam. Are mattress pads enough?

And :open_mouth: I don’t think that’s an accurate post count…maybe her’s is on the fritz. There’s no possible way.

You need at least a pad, memory foam is nice.

More important, in my experience, is a piece of plywood under the bed.

Jesus - its not 4 million - its 4 BILLION… ITS WAY OVER 9000!!!

(apologies, I HAD to say it)

4 billion?! There’s something wrong with her account like collegebound said.

Most people I knew didn’t have them, and the beds had those cheap plastic-covered mattresses that you find in log cabins haha…

I think you must just get used to it.

But having had memory foam I would say it was totally worth the $100. I’ve had it for 2 yrs and it’s so nice I put it on my bed at home during breaks/the summer. I would probably have kept it for all four if I wasn’t looking to upsize from a twin. If your parents won’t buy it, just buy it yourself ya lazy bum ;).

Wouldn’t you sweat a lot on those foam things?

I had the most uncomfortable mattress ever (tear in the middle with springs sticking out) and didn’t need memory foam, although it would have been nice.

There’s no reason not to get one, they’re like 15-20 dollars at Wal-Mart or Target.

The surface of the beds tend to be very hard and springy, so a little cushioning can be really nice. All you need is an egg crate or a thin pillow top, in my opinion, but I wouldn’t want to sleep on most beds without a little padding.

Like others have said though, you can easily afford to buy these yourself, if your parents say no. Even if you have to get a few yards of foam at the craft or fabrics store and trim it to size, you can find alternative options that will make your bed plenty comfortable.

aka, the counter is maxed out. How is the counter maxed out? I dunno, I only took 2 years of comp sci like 6/7 years ago.

A mattress pad ensures that you and your sheets don’t touch the dirty mattress. On the the other hand, you don’t want your bed too comfortable, or you will never want to get out of bed and get to class.

Target has memory foam mattress toppers in twin XL, 1 1/2 inches thick for $19.99. Comes in a handy little carrying case too.
