to accepted penn students..are the acceptance letters just a single letter with information following it later, or does it come in a larger envelope/packet

For transfers, it's online. The physical acceptance letter comes in a large packet thereafter.

Acceptance letters are usually big and fat.

Last year for ED, the decision was obviously online first and then a few days later a large envelope came, but it was really thin. All it had was a printed out version of the online letter and the materials for sending in your deposit. I was kind of disappointed not to get a big pamphlet and a sticker or something, but that big packet comes to all accepted students, including those who got in ED, in the spring.

so what comes in the big packet in the spring? anything cool?

The transfer one was quite large. My mother assumed I got in just from the size of it[compared to a small envelope[regular letter] from another school with a rejection].

So pretty much, when you see a small, measly letter from UPenn after you've applied , your life is over!

i think almost everyone finds out the decision online a few days before they get the letter
