I've heard that Read Residence Center doesn't have them....

Is it really a pain? How hot does it get and around when?

Yeah, Read doesn't have them.

I don't know how bad it gets (I'll be a freshman this fall), but I know how to get one installed:

Get a note from your doctor, saying you need air conditioning for a medical condition (asthma, allergies, etc).

Buy a window unit (you have to actually pay for it and bring it to school)

The school will install it for you, but they'll charge around $50 to do it.

It's a lot of hoops to jump through... whether or not it's worth it is up to you.

It's great to have them in the first few weeks, as it's in the upper 80s. Outside of the first few weeks you won't need them.

My son managed without one. He was in Forest, which is also without AC. It was a bit uncomfortable, as A2Wolves6 says, the first few weeks, but he got a small window fan, and that helped. So, no, AC's are not a necessity, unless you really can't take the heat. (I personally would want one, but I'm an old wimp.)
