Are adcoms generally familiar with most of the applicants' high schools?

I have no idea if this is true, but I've heard somebody say that the admission committee is divided by regions. That is, a group reading the apps from each region of the country.

My first question: IS this true?

If so, does that mean they're familiar with a lot of the schools from their own region? And know which high school is competitive, which ones are super easy/have severe grade inflation/deflation... etc??

usually when your counselor sends your rec, they also send a profile of your school. at least i think thats what they do

I think that adcoms are pretty familiar with most applicants’ high schools, especially since they travel around a lot for high school visits and college fairs. But like Feral said, your college counselor should send a profile of your school with your recommendation, so they’ll have at least some knowledge when reviewing your app.

it is true that they are split up by regions

They’re familiar with schools that send up a lot of applicants. But when it comes to most schools, I doubt their familiarity extends anywhere beyond “hmm, I might have seen the name before”.

i think cornell is attracted to schools named robert e. lee XD

i think most of the lee high schools in texas are represented here at cornell XD

Yes they know schools popular top-tier schools from around the country. Not sure how much of a difference it makes because it just allows them to compare you against someone else who’s applying from your school.

They do, but you have to realize how many high schools there are, and that it’s impossible to really know a ton about every single school.

im pretty sure they know NY state HS pretty well

I don’t think they’re all too familiar. My school sends 4-6 to Cornell every year, is ranked in the top 100 high schools in the U.S. and I remember bringing up the name and he had no idea.
