So if someone is waitlisted at a LAC that is not needs blind, should that person withdraw their financial aid application if they can find a way to pay for college so that their child will have a better chance of getting off the waiting list?

Not all colleges are need blind. Not all need blind colleges promise to meet 100% of need. If you apply to a non-need blind college, then applying for aid does decrease your chances. So would not applying for aid help you get admitted? Yes, but if you cannot afford to go to the college without aid, then it does not do you much good to get admitted.

Athletic scholarships have nothing to do with being need blind. Both places that are need blind and places that are not need blind offer athletic scholarships. Need blind refers to the effects of an application for financial on your prospects for admission. The fact that other students get athletic scholarships is unrelated.

Would withdrawing your application for aid get you off the waitlist? Impossible to know. It would depend on the particular college involved, how large a waitlist they maintained, how many people they take off this year, whether the financial need was really the reason for a waitlist rather than acceptance... If you take this strategy, what will you do when the tuition bill arrives, with no financial aid?

I was just throwing it out there for discussion sake. I am not considering this strategy, but know someone who is. I think they could afford the tuition etc. but would have liked a little help.
