Are admissions for Computer Engineering more competitive?

Hi ...I want to do comp. engineering in college . Computer Engg. is a very popular major(esp. among asians) .... so does that imply that it is harder to get admitted in a univ. if ur major is Comp. Engg. ?

depends on the university.

Yes and my simple reasoning is: being popular implies a lot people want it, a lot people want it implies high compitition.

Well... supply and demand, silent777. If demand's high, then it doesn't matter if there's a larger supply, so long as the supply doesn't overwhelm the demand.

To the OP- scorp's right. It really depends upon where you're looking to apply. I know that at Rice, at least, you just apply to the university, and you can specify a college (eg, engineering, liberal arts, etc... there are additional requirements for architecture and music, though...) that you're looking at, but it really has no bearing on your admission to the university. I know there are other programs like this, and I know there are programs where it's more difficult to get in if you're choosing a popular major.

Figure out which universities you'd like to apply to, talk to the folks in the admissions and computer engineering departments, and ask them your question. They'll be glad to help out.

Good luck!

As those before me have said: it depends on the university. I know for sure that at Carnegie Mellon it is harder to get accepted in EECS but they won't reject you they'll just tell you that you can't major in EECS (only for the first year and then you might be able to transfer). However other schools (like Stanford) don't accept you to a definite school let alone a program.

thanx for all the inputs
aibrr , superwizard : here are some of the schools i am thinking of ... UPenn , Cornell , Northwestern , JHU and CMU( about which you have already described) ..... so abt. what these schools .... ? And most particularly Cornell , how does it work there .... ?

Bump !!!!!

Well at Cornell you have to specify a school and I know that it is harder to get into the engineering program but I really don't know if they look at the specific major there sorry

@ JHU your major does not have an impact on your admissions (at least that was the case when I applied, still true though I think) the exception is the BME major where in order to become BME you have to indicate it on your application as your first choice major and then after acceptance the BME department reviews your app and accepts or rejects you. It is possible to be admitted into JHU and not into BME. But for all other majors I don't think they force you to choose that early because they want you to have some freedom to switch majors.

Best way to know for sure is to contact the admissions offices of each of those schools. We're just regular folks like you, maybe with a little more experience than you have, and if we haven't applied to a particular school within the past couple of years, there's very little chance of our giving you accurate answers to your questions. You're going to have to do some footwork here. =</p>

Sorry...! Good luck!

Thnx a lot guys
Now I dont think I really need to find if a particular major affects my chances or not ..... ECE is wat i want to do and therefore there is no queston of applying to a school and specifying another major just to get in ...
However I will contact the admission offices at these schools , just for curiousity's sake ...
Thanx again ....
