Are all exams at the UCs free-response?

I've read in some threads that one of the things that transfers have to adapt to is managing exams that are all free-response.

Is this a UC thing? Or maybe it's an upper-division thing? Or even just a class-by-class basis?

I know community college courses have multiple-choice exams for the most part (but they are lower-division courses only), although my Anthro 101 final was all free-response essay questions.

Will I not have to buy scantrons anymore when I transfer? :)

Nope, I’m at Berkeley (EECS) and have had multiple choice, True/False, fill in the blank, free response (writing code, theoretical stuff, math), just about everything. Bigger classes are more likely to have questions that are fast to grade, but it depends on the professor, the class, the school, etc. My humanities class has also been a mix of matching, short answers, and essays. So, just be prepared for whatever.

It probably depends on your major. As a science major, molecular biology major, most of my upper division classes are not multiple choice. Whereas, from what I’ve heard, a lot of the lower division classes can be or will have partial MC and free response: lower div physics, chemistry, and bio. I couldn’t really tell you for humanities/social science majors, but if I had to guess I’d assume they would tend to be free response.

And for the record at my CC most of my classes where not multiple choice. Biology and gen chem were half and half and most of my GEs were free response or half and half. So not all CCs are use mainly multiple choice exams.

I am a transfer at UC Davis this fall. I have a mix of upper division and lower division classes. For my lower division history class for both mid-term and final exam we had 5-7 IDs, meaning we had to write 4-6 sentences or a paragraph on terms/events and then an essay on a topic of the professors choice. The essay had to be long, at least an hour of writing.
For a lower division world music class we had a multiple choice mid term. Then the final exam was an essay that we did at home and a 50 question multiple choice exam in class.

For my upper division anthropology class we had lots of short writing assignments during the quarter. Both mid term and final exam were do at home essays of about 5-6 pages.

So you can see there is a variety. I have had to buy scantrons as well as blue books. It will all depend on your professor.
