Are Americans too religious?

"According to a 2002 study by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, the US was the only developed nation in the survey where a majority of citizens reported that religion played a 'very important' role in their lives..."
(Religion in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

What do you think?

The can has been opened, the worms wriggle out…

I wouldn’t say we’re “too religious”. Religion should be your own damn business; pray to God, Jesus, Allah, Yahweh, Vishnu, whatever you like - just don’t let it interfere with other peoples lives, don’t be a threat. As much as christian evangelical extremist groups scare me, they’re hardly a major threat in this country. Besides, studies also show each generation seems to get less religious, so 100 years from now I doubt it will be this way in America.

I dont think americans are TOO religious, buy they bring it into things they shouldn’t. Like my friend was ar church yday and the priest was talking about jesus being born etc and then began talking about obamas birth…wth, no connection? People are treating him like a messiah and it shouldnt be that way. I dont know, thats just my opinion.

ahahahh now we’re dragging politics into religion…I sense a 10 pg rant thread! whatever happened to be being neutral, switzerland? :p

I’ve always seen two sides to religion. One side is good - spreads morality, good faith, charity, etc. Definitely could use some of that in our country. The other side is, well, nutty. I don’t have to explain this do I?

I realize I’m derailing the thread here, but I’m still pretty ****ed about the gay marriage outcome in California. Legislation based solely on people’s religious beliefs and weak stomachs.

I think religion is too politicized in America. For example, Catholics who identify with American conservatism are rabidly “pro-life” yet support the death penalty whole-heartedly (see Pat Buchanan). This is in direct violation of Catholic teachings, and it represents the blurring of the lines between religious affiliation and party politics.

Too religious? Maybe not. But a lot of moral beliefs spawn from religions in the US, even if most of the people who follow these beliefs aren’t religious.

I personally just wish there would be absolutely no religion involved in politics. The way it should be.

Nor should there ever be a time where the majority is allowed to vote down a right against a minority… -cough-prop 8-cough-

Obviously, there was a lot religion voting there.

-sigh- America needs to get over itself.

I’m sure there will be another proposition condemning the mixture of linen and wool in our clothing if the religious people have their way …

Leviticus 19:19 -*Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

Rational thought at its finest!

No, America is not “too religious.” There’s nothing wrong with people choosing to live as they wish. Mind your own business.

It seems as if a lot of people around me are becoming atheist/agnostic.

^yeah sorta agree. I don’t think US is too religious at all, lol. People also tend to do a good job of not bringing it into every conversation and causing a huge fight… sometimes. lol. or complete opposite.

I wonder if people go door-to-door selling their religion in other countries.

Well, if by too religious you mean trying to convert you, inviting you to go to Church even if you are not Christian “to be put on the correct path”, and so on - I have seen that in some parts of South.

DEFINITELY. It scares me even hear in LA. I kid you not that I’ve literally walked into prayers/bible studies at starbucks and coffee beans. You can always spot a family praying or “thanking god” for dinner. It’s extremely scary how delusional people can be about their faith, especially when most have gone through a liberal arts education(or general ed) that is suppose to OPEN their mind.

You can’t drive a mile without seeing at least one church/mosque/temple etc.

If people aren’t “religious” they at least believe in god.

religion and race can cause a lot of trouble lol
so it is better not to talk about it :)

lol i want to share something, but no comments lol

It appears that the fastest rising religion-relevant categories are Infidel and Unaffiliated. The religion problem might be fixed in time.

To answer the original question, yes, some Americans are too religious. Something is seriously wrong where someone like Congressperson John Shimkus is taken seriously.

Wow praying in public is scary and having bible study in Starbucks, that’s enough to frighten anyone. Let’s get religion out of politics and bring back Jim Crow because churches were involved in dismantling it. Let’s get rid of Federal charity programs like Social Security and Welfare because those were based on religious beliefs.

And just so those damn Catholics don’t spread their religion, let’s close all the Catholic colleges. Goodbye, Notre Dame, Georgetown, BU and any other religion’s colleges, because everyone knows college educated people shouldn’t still believe in something as ridiculous as God. Let’s revel in all the wonderful charitable institutions founded by Atheists and Agnostics.

How dare those religious hospitals refuse to perform abortions if the government mandates it. How dare they let their beliefs get in the way of letting women have the choice to kill their unborn children. Those Catholic hospitals should just close so the open minded among us don’t have to put up with the Church shoving their religion down our throats.

The religious should have no right to vote, because they only vote for hate and bigotry. Religions have no right to disagree with politicians because of the separation of state. Keep religion out of politics. Religious people should have no right, except in private, to show and speak their beliefs. The first amendment is only for the tolerant and open minded, as they define it, and we all know religions only exist to spread hate.

I had always wondered how the normally sane people of Germany could become so cruel so quickly after the rise of Hitler, but now I can see the seeds of totalitarianism in the hate-filled screeds of some posters every time religion comes up on this board, and no, the hate doesn’t come from the religious posters.

btw i am convent educated (even though i am not a Christian) but to be frank one has to be god fearing and stuff .The point here is that it is religion which makes ppl come closer and stuff and it kind of helps to demotes crime

I know your post isn’t meant to be serious, but if we were back in November, I totally would have agreed with this. At least in California…
