Dear lord, no. Being from Upstate is a blessing. High costs? Rude people? Smoggy air?

I'm applying to CMU too. Congrats on the admission! :D You deserve a pat on the back for your hard work. How -did- you find out about your admission so early, though?

Thanks. I did a program at cmu this summer which let me apply early action if i took 2 classes (it was really early, sep. 1st deadline).

thats really cool!
did you apply to cornell ED?

I am having absolute anxiety. I want it to be Mid-December already. I miss Cornell. It would be nice to know where I am going. Guess I just have to wait.

However, I am focusing my attention on other things, such as other college applications if I need to submit them.

And of course enjoying my senior year!!

Yeah, I applied to Cornell ED.

ah, I am from north shore LI. I love it upstate though! I have a lot of family around Utica/Syracuse. I liked growing up here, but I am positive I need to leave (and never come back) so don't say you'd rather live here! haha

Cayuga: Yeah, upstate is nice in terms of lower costs and less smog, but there are plenty of annoying people here too (haha). The downside is that there are a lot less interesting things to do in the Capital Region than, say, LI or NYC. But a plus side of it is that, if I do get into Cornell, it's only about a 3.5 hour drive.

vitae: Yeah, I'm definitely not going to live here, but visiting here is nice. How do you like LI? Up here it's basically only a myth, haha.

I'm not certain what you can do in NYC that you can't do in Albany or Troy. Read a book? Watch a movie? Get coffee? See a concert? And if you want to go to the MET, it's only a day trip away.

I do know that the Adirondacks are a hell of a lot closer to Albany than to Manhattan, though.

Let's just say you can exhaust the "fun things to do" list in Albany pretty fast.
The restaurants are overwhelmingly crappy (though there are a few nice ones that popped up where all the state workers go to lunch/dinner) and, especially in my 'burb, there's nothing to do.
I'm not going to schlep to downtown Albany to hang out, no one hangs out in the non-seedy parts of Albany for fun. When state workers aren't there, no one is.

NYC has a lot more opportunities for culture-seekers.

And I'm not a nature person

shrugs

Maybe Albany and Troy are worse than I make them out to be. I've actually been pleasantly surprised at the amount of culture in Buffalo/Niagara after living in Boston for a couple of years.

You should become a nature person, especially with the Dacks so close.

Back in my USS swim team days I had a lot of meets in the Albany/Troy area....I tried so hard to get my parents to move there b/c I loved the area.

Looking back on things...I'm glad they never entertained that thought :-)

Have you done everything/been everywhere dewdrop/Cayuga???

Really, dewdrop? It's really not a wonderful place to live. A few 'burbs surrounding it are awesome places to go to school and raise a family, but other than that, there's nothing about Albany that I like.
What did you like so much about Albany/Troy?

Yeah... be glad haha. I'm definitely going to try to leave the area after college.

Dude....I was 13 at the time and enthralled with the idea of living in a city. There is no way in heck I'd chose to live in the Albany/Troy area now. I was trying to support your notion that Albany/Troy is not that great...did you not read my last sentence?

What is up with the attitude? I never once insinuated that I'd lived anywhere or done everything (and I certainly haven't...I only comment on what I know).

Whoa... I didn't have an attitude, I was merely extolling your worldliness...

Guess I missed it, lol

And I was just complimenting you two, rather than putting you down.

Yeah, I dislike Albany/Troy a fair amount, the suburbs are nice though.

I apologize.....now, moving on....

Actually...I'd have to say that I'd chose Albany/Troy over New Orleans :-)

Apology accepted.... possibly... haha jk.

Hmm, I probably would too just because I'd rather live in the Northeast (where I'm from) than the South.

Waiting for decisions is pretty much dominating my life right now, so at this point my future destination in terms of area of residence is murky.

hey now! respect the alums!! haha...kidding

New Orleans scares me because of the crime...although you'll find that in any city. But...when I turned on the news last night and heard about a beating that took place (because the victim wouldn't give a panhandler money) right around the block from an elementary school where I tutor aaaaaand there was also a murder 3 blocks from my place.....I get a little nervous :-)

that should make anyone a little nervous, if not very nervous. I, fortunately, one could say, come from a very quiet little town, so major crime in practically zero. No robberies, no muggings, certainly no murder (except this one case a few years ago where a women killed her husband with a candlestick in self-defense....). The worst I face here is someone taking a few dollars from my wallet in the gym locker room...
