Are any other EDers going out of their minds with anxiety right now?

Understandable GNS, sorry again for offending you.

Ok GNS, first of all you haven't seen real anti-semitism if you think this is "vile filth". My parents immigrated from a country that didn't accept them to college, give them jobs, or let them live a peaceful life because they were Jews. I am the least anti-Semitic person on this planet (don't start picking on the whole exaggeration thing, you know what I mean). I was merely commenting that certain LI Jews that I personally know exhibited those negative qualities, I was never saying ALL LI Jews or ALL Non-LI Jews were bad/good. I love being Jewish, and I think you shouldn't be so easily offended. I understand where you come from, but I haven't seen anything truly disgusting said about Jews here. However, there is a certain subset of the LI/NYC population (including non-jews by ALL means) that need to realize that they don't have golden blood running through their veins.

Whew, that was a long rant. I just don't want to be accused of being anti-Semitic when I hold no prejudice against any religions/ethnicities/etc

Damn, I hate when people can't poke fun at themselves once in a while. In my group of friends, we have a Jew and me, who is a good chunk Mexican. A ton of our jokes consist of "making fun of" each other's ethnicity (i.e. I might drop a penny in front of my Jewish friend or he might bring me to a fence to see if I can climb it and we all end up cracking up) and we know that these jokes are just for fun, just as the postings were on this thread. My point is: calm down, it's just joking around.

ChandlerBing, I was not calling you anti-semetic, I was merely stating that the views expressed by some in this board were anti-semetic. While your intent may have been to refer to a few members of your community, it got way out of hand.

And as I said in my earlier post, I have no problem making fun of myself - I do it all the time. The problem lies when friendly jokes become an entire page that specifically refers to my community by name.

I did over-react, but I just wanted to nip this discussion in the bud. Seeing as that has been accomplished, I see no reason to further this debate.

To those who apologized, thanks. I appreciate it, and I am sorry for over-reacting.

Is joking around fine? Sure. Is there a fine line between joking around and hate speech. Yes. I saw the discussion as potentially crossing the line, and I acted accordingly.

In closing, best of luck to you all next Thursday.

all's good all's good, nothing got out of hand.... anyways, blame it on the anxiety... lol

almost just 1 week away.... CAN'T STAND THIS!!

me neither! 8 days... until d-day

d standing for whatever you want it to stand for (decision, doom, death, etc)

wait a minute, wait a minute, the stereotypes I mentioned in my last post about Jews were actually positive ones - they're set on getting into top colleges? not a bad generalization...something to be proud of.

GNS - May I assume your username stands for Great Neck South? :) I did say Great Neck is a primarily Jewish town, but isn't that true? My neighboring hometown of Manhasset is primarily Catholic - nothing to be offended about, it's just the way it is...we're still the best of neighbors.

no offense was intended so please don't be upset! I don't hate Jews! Without them there would be no bagels!!! also, we would have to go to school on rosh hashanah/yom kippur.

ok honestly, everyone needs to stop talking about jews and get back on topic..

[spontaneously combusts]

whoa relax buddy...I was talking to a specific poster to apologize, so just ignore it and move on. sheesh. no reason to spontaneously combust over the whole thing.

^there's something called a private message. Use it.

You have an attitude, Silverz.

And thanks for the laugh, Tboone, lmao.

Eightttttttt dayssssssss until death/death (either die of joy or of devastation)

uhh, there's something called manners. Use them.

sometimes I think people have forgotten this is a public message board...I'm going to assume you're just really stressed out or something, but you're rude.

Let me remind all posters of CC Terms of Service (TOS):

It violates TOS discuss moderation or moderators on the site. (We get here as fast as we can, when reports come in; and you are responsible for what you post to stay within TOS.)

Racial and ethnic slurs violate TOS.

The poster who objected after two pages of violations was on solid ground. Had I seen the same posts sooner, I'd have deleted them all. Someone raised his head to challenge several folks for speaking negatively in broad generalities about "all" or "most" of a group of people based on some subset of experience with a handful of people in that group.

Good try, but when held responsible by others, it doesnt work to claim it's "just a joke." It isn't a joke now, because it wasn't when it was posted. Keep in mind that what your friends say in real life has a context; you know their personalities; you see their body language. But here on a public forum, context and humor can't be as easily perceived.

If another country has a government that has institutionalized antiSemitism, so it's much worse there, that doesn't make a small amount of antiSemitism okay in this country.

Adding that the negative comments about the ethnic group were followed by positive phrases doesn't really convince. Which part didn't you "really mean" .. the positive or the negative? You lose credibility.

Break apart the word. Prejudice means to "pre-judge." If you've already made up your mind, before you meet someone Jewish (or Irish, or Italian, AfAm or Asian) from Long Island because you've decided they are a certain "way" before they even say hello, you are pre-judging them based on ethnicity or race. So, don't be surprised then if someone reacts to your prejudice with dismay.

Rather than torpedo this entire thread, or infract individual posters, I also saw much good information and feelings exchanged about anxiety this week. Also, the debate about the ethnic slurs resolved itself rather well, so credit to all to realize these things among yourselves.

Look, I recognize that everyone is feeling concern and anxiety over pending decisions that are not in your control. What is always in your control is how you speak and characterize others.

Just think about it, and realize that there is always someone within range who is part of some group. When you insult any group significantly, you can count on it that someone will pop out of the woodwork to stand up for themselves.

No apologies needed for protesting what amounts to a violation of this site's Terms of Service. I perceived no over-reaction whatsoever, just an honest and justified reaction.

I want us now to change the topic back to the topic: anxiety awaiting ED decisions.

stargazer, I didnt mean to be rude to you. My combustion was a reply to the original topic about posters going out of their minds with anxiety right now, not anything about anti semitism.

Lol too many ny'ers in dis thread.
On another note my typical westchester high school has too many of these kinds of people (please note that the term applies to all stuck up rich suburban nyc brats).

[Mod note: link to website deleted here].

The ithaca satire show ivy portrays this character quite nicely.

lol, nobody here is an antisemite...

...

Am I the only one who sees the Moderator's Note a few posts above? The note that very definetely says we should NOT still be talking about Jewish people? Anyone? Anyone?

I think they want to be booted

I am anxious for decisions and I like being on topic!
