I’m feeling really conflicted about pursuing it. I feel like I’ll have a better time at my safety (jmu) for a year, and the environment is too drastically different to UVA. However, it is guaranteed admission and it’s only for a year. If there are other Northern VA or metropolitan VA people wanting to do this, please use this thread to discuss!
We seriously considered it but gave up after some thought. Initially we were under the misguided notion that the 30 credit requirement can be met in one semester given the AP credits that have already been completed. However it was clarified that a two semester presence is required. One semester is bearable but two would be a stretch: the nearest mall is about one hour away and there is NOTHING to do in town. For a kid who grew up in a metropolitan area with a diverse group of friends and a wide variety of entertainment and dining options this can be tough. In addition, while this might offend some, academic rigor is another issue to ponder: the ACT score range of students at Wise is 17-23 and the graduation rate is 44%; we felt that a student who has been waitlisted at UVA Charlottesville might not feel adequately challenged by the academics. Of course, this was our opinion and others might disagree.
Also there is no nearby airport? We have drive from NOVA for 8 hours to get there on dangerous 81?
I am also a NOVA person who was given the Wise decision, and I am considering it heavily. I am a full IB candidate, and were very upset to hear that I would be sent somewhere where I felt I may not be as challenged. However, it is hopeful to hear that there are others like me who are in the same boat! I really hope UVA gives us an outlet to talk to one another, because I would really consider doing it if I knew I had others would I could become friends with in the same situation !!
One of the parent created this FB page for those who are considering UVA Wise option
Search FB group:
UVA Wise? UVA CLAS23
Is that page still available? nothing comes up in our search. My daughter is also leaning toward this option, btw.
