so today my singing teacher just told me that i was a bass. i know that the world of musical theatre is very demanding of male voices where it seems like only the successful males are tenors. is that true? or do i still have a chance?

How long have you been studying voice? My son started out as a Bass 2, and he still has those lovely low notes, but through study and practice his range has extended enormously and he is now listing himself as a baritone. Lots of great parts for baritones in musical theatre. Also less competition. At a recent audition, my son was complimented by several of the college representatives present for, in one professor’s words, “sounding like a man.”

Absolutely there is place for this type of voice. And I agree with what prodesse says - my son techinically is still a Bass 2 (for choir purposes) but his vocal range, according to the music scale, makes him a baritone. Lots of great roles for baritones. And I have a similar story – at a recent college audition, the auditors asked him for FOUR songs from his repertoire, one of which he was asked to sing all the way through. Now, he may not get into the school (that remains to be seen) but the professor present said they rarely hear voices like that. Embrace the gift you’ve been given because it is the thing that will make them remember you!!

Bass voices are always in demand in MT. There are many lead and character roles that call for low voices and, of course, the chorus always has a bass part. As a bass, I can assure you that your upper register can expand with time, practice, and coaching into the baritone range.
