are blogs publications?

Do blogs that you follow count as " the print and/or electronic publications you read regularly:" ?

yes, though think about whether or not you want the AO looking up the blog you select and whether or not you think that is a good representation of your intellectuality, personality and what you have to offer.

Absolutely. As adgeek says, though, it’s probably a good idea to stick to blogs like Huffington Post, Slate, WIRED, Gawker, etc. rather than your best friend’s tumblr.

Thanks for the replies. I was particularly talking about Freakonomics Blog on nytimes.com and another kept by a Chinese writer that I admire, so I guess they should be included.

^yes I think those would look great

I would argue opposite. if your best friends tumblr is wildy interesting and if you can explain it somewhere in your application, I would put that down :P

Bigcrit, I absolutely believe there are cases in which you’d be right, but if I were applying to college, I’d be sure to set the bar for that very, very high.

lol i listed a sex blog by a harvard university student and i got in

Lol @breakdown.

But do you think it would be safer to just put tumblr in general, and not a specific url? I need SOMETHING as I don’t really read too many print/online publications.

i think listing tumblr in general would not work. it’s not a publication. it’s a service that hosts various personal publications.

most tumblrs are just a bunch of “inspiring” pictures by “sensitive” teenagers who are really “deep”. oh, and hipsters, too. i doubt most people have something truly noteworthy to say on tumblr. i wouldnt lol

If you really don’t read many print/online publications, then just don’t put much for that area. If you spend your time reading fiction instead of magazines and blogs, then you won’t have much for publications but you’ll have a lot for favorite books. There are certainly ways to “fluff” this part of the application, but don’t make the mistake of misrepresenting yourself to the admissions committee.

@pwoods, thanks, I really do love reading so my “books” section will be quite full, I just literally only have one or two reputable online/print publications that I keep up with. I guess I’ll just list those then and hope it’s good enough for the admissions officer (:
