Are certain schools or programs easier to be admitted to

I was wondering if anyone knows if there are certain programs or schools that you ca apply to that might have higher acceptance rate or lower stats? If so, can you transfer out easily after one year to Liberal arts? At some Universities it is done. Any knowledge or advise on this subject would be appreciated…

There are no easier programs to get into since they are all so specialized. The Art school expects a very good art portfolio, the Music school will audition applicants, the school of Kinesiology usually admits accomplished athletes, and the Nursing school usually expects demonstrated interest in the natural sciences and in working in healthcare. Of course, if you happen to be a talented artist or musician, and apply to those programs, the academic standards for admission will indeed be lower.

Alexandre, I understand your comments, and thank you for them. But is it possible that certain majors have less demand, and thus easier admission standards?

Actually @alexandre , while the nursing school certainly wants students to be able to articulate why they are intersested in nursing they explicitly said that they didn’t expect any experience working in health care. To quote one person at the nursing admissions session " we know that most health care volunteering positions come as a result of connections, we really don’t pay much attention to it. ( it’s true that at our local hospitals you have to have a big donor get you a volunteer position) "

And statistically it is easier to get into the nursing school.

Thank you Maya. Are there any other programs/majors that are statistically easier?

I agree with everyone above, but would add that schools start new programs all the time. If a program is new and trying to get off the ground, it might be a little less selective when it comes to letting people in the door.

As an example: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/11/04/colleges-start-new-programs

Thanks Maya. I know that the smaller colleges emphasize fit and personal qualities/talent over academic record. That is clearly the case with Art, Music, Kines and Nursing. In the case of Art and Music, the talent should be tangible. With Kines and Nursing, I think it is more a question of demonstrated interest and fit. Either way, a student who is not genuinely interest in those colleges will have a difficult time getting in, either because their essay will not be convincing or because they lack the talent to get in.

Nursing and Kinesiology are probably the easiest schools to get into as a freshman.

Here you can see both the average GPA and average ACT are lower than the overall university’s, but I don’t know what % are athletes.

In 2010 Aug, the acceptance rate for undergrad for Kinesiology was 44%

“In 2010 Aug, the acceptance rate for undergrad for Kinesiology was 44%”

2010 is ancient history when it comes to admit rates ForeverAlone.

When we visited last year they said middle 50 percent for nursing was 26-30. Definitely below most of umich. Average UWMGPA was 3.8

Nursing (along with engineering) has one of the most difficult course loads. Once you are in your can usually transfer between schools as long as you have a B average (except Ross)

I know a student in Music school was admitted with ACT 25, however, I would not call it easier. Looking at the admission stat alone could be meaningless. Other than certain specific programs, UMich does not admit directly into specific majors. So picking a new program or a less popular intended major would not likely to help admission chance.
