Are community style dorms as bad as they seem?

I have been doing a LOT of research about FSU dorms and it seems like all the negative comments are about community style dorms. I was looking to live in a community style dorm if admitted because I will save over a thousand dollars a year. I haven't been able to find many positives about the community style dorms and I was wondering if anyone had any idea which community style dorms are the best?

Are they as bad as they seem? From what stories I’ve heard about them, you’d think the place was dilapidated and every community style dorm was minutes away from caving in on itself.

They’re not horrible. You do have to remember though that the community style dorms are all pretty old, whereas suite-style dorms like Wildwood and DeGraff are only 4 years old.

You can certainly survive. And it really is a significant step up money-wise from one of them to a dorm like Wildwood. But then again, no one really “wants” to live in a community style dorm just because of all the horror stories they hear.

I am a parent, but we did alot of research last year on dorms because my daughter’s priority number was on the bubble for community vs. suite style. We attended preview day in the spring and were able to tour a couple dorms, which we found very helpful. Smith has beds that are built into the wall, thus eliminating any under the bed storage potential. We were told by housing that Dorman has some of the biggest dorm rooms on campus and that Deviney had recently gotten new carpet in the hallways. I have consistently heard that community dorms are more social, but maybe a student could speak to that. My daughter lived in Degraff for summer term and found it to be very noisy. She currently lives in an east side dorm and prefers the location, being close to classes, library, etc. If you have the opportunity attend preview day, but narrow down which dorms you want to tour beforehand because time is limited. Also, in community style dorms you don’t have to clean the bathroom.

Having lived in 2 suite style halls and 1 community style hall, I can definitely attest that the community style halls are WAY more social. The rooms are smaller, but it’s not like you’re living in a dumpy space. It’s a clean room that, while a little tight, fits two people just fine. The bathroom situation in a community hall is way better than in a suite hall because it is cleaned every weekday. Just from my experience, the suite style bathrooms tend to get NASTY, as they are cleaned only once per semester by maintenance. Residents often refuse to clean them, because none of the 4 or 5 are willing to take responsibility for making the mess (I know I sure didn’t, and I wasn’t cleaning up after someone else).

Most people that live in the community halls don’t actually dislike it. The horror stories actually come from the people that have no true story to tell.

Matt125-
Would you please list in order of preference which dorm you would recommend
to a true freshman matriculating at FSU for the first time and which dorms you
would avoid ? Thanks David Key Biscayne
