It seems like UC's are going to be brutally hard to get into next year, so I'm looking at the cal state system as a backup. I hear they are impacted, but how selective are their admissions? I'm a 3.0 gpa computer science major, and I'm looking into Long Beach, Northridge, and San Diego. I'll apply to Cal Poly SLO as well but I doubt I'll get in.

Some, like SLO , but also San Diego reject a lot of applicants, especially out of service area, and in impacted majors. The CSU website has lists of impacted campuses and impacted campuses, that will say if they have extra requirements.

You might want to look at Cal Pol Pomona .

Out of the schools that I’m looking into, CS is impacted only at San Diego and Cal Poly SLO. That’s not a big deal since I’m not too interested in SD anyway, and I’m only applying to SLO for the lolz. I know I won’t get in. Pomona requires 2 semesters of Physics for the CS program, but I have already completed a semester of General Chemistry. So I’m going to finish Chem and apply to the schools that I accept it.

Anyway, so if my major isn’t impacted at the school I’m applying to, and I maintain a 3.0+ and finish my all pre-reqs, I should be in yeah?

Really depends on the campus, like if you’re going for San Marcos or some of the newer, less popular ones you’re basically in, but if you’re going for Long Beach…

Like, you wouldn’t ask “Is UC hard to get into?” because they’re all over the place in terms of selectivity.

That being said, most CSUs are pretty easy to get into if you have the GPA/pre-reqs.

Wait wait, tell me about Long Beach. My friend got into their Civil Engineering program with a 3.0. Since I have the same GPA and my major is also in the College of Engineering, I’m assuming I should be set…

Why are UCs going to be brutally hard to get into next year?

From the way I understand it, all the UC/CSU rejects of last year in addition to the '13 transfers will be applying this fall. A LOT of my friends with solid stats were rejected from UC/CSU engineering programs this year, so they’re all stay an additional year and re-applying. There were a few posts in various threads discussing this, so you’ll probably have to check elsewhere to get the full story.

For fall 2012, a 3.0 GPA would have been rejected for computer science at SJSU, but accepted for computer engineering or software engineering at SJSU. Software engineering is most similar to computer science, but requires some extra software engineering methods courses displacing additional computer science topics. It may be worth considering as a backup plan if you consider SJSU desirable for its prime recruiting location in Silicon Valley but do not think you can get into the computer science major. Note: consider UCSC for similar location reasons.

[SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1013.html)

CSUs with ABET-accredited computer science degree programs that are not impacted for that major (according to http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf ) include:

Chico
Dominguez Hills
Long Beach
Los Angeles
Northridge
Sacramento
San Bernardino
San Francisco

However, many of the above are campus-impacted (basically all except Dominguez Hills and Northridge for transfers). See [CSU Campus Impaction Information | Student Academic Support | CSU](http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impaction-campus-info.shtml) .

Thanks for the info! SJSU would be the best choice for me, honestly, BUT they require the physics sequence. I’m already halfway through the chemistry sequence (since many other UC’s and CSU’s accept it instead of physics) so I’m going to finish that. Starting physics would cause me to stay at community college for an extra year. I’ve already been here for 3 years due to switching majors multiple times, going into my 4th year, and I will probably jump off a bridge if I have to stay for a 5th year.

You should also consider TAG to UC Santa Cruz, Riverside and Merced.

@theresistance

that’s how it works every year lol…

That’s how it works for those transfer applicants that are residents of that particular CSUs service area (usually designated by one or more counties). Residents of that school’s service area will get priority to admissions especially if the applying major (or whole campus) is impacted.

For those who apply outside the service areas it is suggested to be as competitive as possible. Are there any CSUs near where you live that have accredited CS programs?

If you’ve not already decided on doing a TAG with a UC yet, then I would highly recommend to.

Well, I live in the SF Bay Area, which has SJSU and SFSU. SJSU is out of the question since I haven’t done Physics, so that leaves SFSU. Their CS program ABET accredited which is great, but I would much rather go to Cal Poly or Long Beach.

I should clarify that I’m REALLY trying hard to get into a UC. My GPA is exactly 3.030, and if I maintain that after my summer classes (Linear Algebra and Speech), I should be eligible for a TAG with UC Santa Cruz. But I’ve heard that TAG doesn’t guarantee admission into the MAJOR, just the school. So that’s why I’m looking into back ups.

You can still be accepted to those programs (it would all depend on the transfer competition and impacted status), but it would be easiest to be accepted to your local CSU for ‘safety’ purposes. Apply to all CSUs you would be willing to attend.

Would you be willing to do TAG with UCSC and attend there over a CSU in spite of this being the case, or would you rather attend the CSU with a good program if accepted into the major?

“Would you be willing to do TAG with UCSC and attend there over a CSU in spite of this being the case, or would you rather attend the CSU with a good program if accepted into the major?”

I have absolutely no interest in any other majors. Computer Science is the only thing I want to study. Besides, I’ve already devoted so much time to this major that it would be heartbreaking for me to switch to anything else. So honestly, I want to go to a college where I can study EXACTLY what I want to major in. I’ll take a CSU with a good CS program over a UC with an irrelevant major.

But like I said, UC’s are my #1 priority. I really want to get into Davis, Santa Cruz, or Irvine. I’m just not sure how likely I am of getting accepted, so I have to look at the next best thing, which is CSU’s with good CS programs.

SJSU CS requires two semesters of physics and one more science course. Couldn’t you take two semesters (or three quarters) of physics next academic year, and use the chemistry course you have already taken as the additional science course?

Physics may actually be more useful for CS, if you go into something like software development for games or engineering applications.

As being someone who definitely contributed to the whole UC/CSU transfer admission hysteria. One of my top reasons for transfer admissions being more competitive next year is the bottleneck effect that is being created at the CCC level by budget cuts, leading to significantly less classes, meaning more competition to get said classes, leading to what used to be the 2year JuCo pit stop to the 3-4+ year JuCo experience…

I was in the same position as you last year. coming off summer classes i had a 3.20 and after wall semester i was able to pull it up to a 3.33. I would say aim for UCI + UCSC for your uc. CSU LB + Both cal poly and keep up the work through fall atleast to increase your chance. also for spring don’t do what i did xD and try to power through the remaining 1 semester you have.

For uc stuff. Last year i applied to UCD,UCSC,UCI,UCSD i got rejected from UCD, Waitlisted @ uci(got in), ucsd(nope), and ucsc(got in).
the tag process for ucsc was great until alot of us CCer got denied to baskin and were ask to apply for general admit. Drove a few of us insane and we didn’t get our letters until mid may. So you might wanna look up their 7 foundation course for comp sci to see how close you are to completing them. I’m going to say i got very lucky this year with uci doing a holistic review since my Personal statement and experience was aimed specifically @ ucsc and uci computer game science major.
