do you guys believe CSU's are normally lowclass compared to UC's? my friend was talking about how his cousin got into CSUN and said that school is pretty much trash compared to schools like UCLA etc and would have a hard time getting hired by companies compared to graduates from UCB etc. I honestly think it is true, but i would like to know your opinions..

yes, generally speaking csu’s are of a lower caliber than uc’s with few exceptions depending on the field and the particular csu and uc…but yea, ucla and ucb grads will find it a lot easier to get hired than csun grads…

they’re easier to get into for sure, but some like SJSU and the Cal Polys are really good for engineering and probably other programs. But others, like Chico, are filled with average people who party like nobody’s business.

I agree with everybody here. The CSU’s are by no means “lower class” schools. However, I must admit that they are easier to get into when compared to the UC’s.

Csu’s prepare you for the workplace better i believe coming out of undergrad and
U.C original purpose was to lead you into graduate school so it also depends on what you want to do.

From a prestige standpoint then yes there is a difference.

From a peer standpoint i think is the biggest difference , as a whole i believe U.C student bodies are more motivated than their csu counterparts so drive often result in success in life and thus by logic you would have more successful friends coming out of U.C . That not to say that people coming out Csu can’t be successful

imho when you get into a top tier UC, you’re in competition with other equally motivated students who have also proven their capabilities which is why they were admitted in the first place. which means it’ll be harder to get into a good grad school even with stats of 3.5+ (which is already a feat in of itself @ UCs) because the selection pool of people is so similar which is why the standards for people at top tier UC campuses like CAL and LA are raised significantly.

whereas if you go to a private or a CSU campus where acceptance is based around more than your grades, you have the chance to stand out. even within the UC system, the general unspoken consensus is that one who graduates from UCLA will have a better advantage in the job market compared to one who graduated from, let’s say UCR much less a CSU. i also know a 2 grad students at harvard who graduated from csun

sorry for rambling on, but this is just my opinion (and an excuse to put off finishing my USC ap for another minute)

You are all making this way too complicated. UC’S > CSU’s in every way possible. end of story. (Merced and Riverside can just be left out of this equation.)

Well CSU’s are also considered very good schools. Some, like CalPoly, are widely recognized throughout the country. Also, some CSU’s are better than UC’s for certain majors. Eg: Social Work

And well, it’s not really fair to compare most schools to UCLA and UCB because they’re internationally recognized. Most schools, not just CSU’s, aren’t at their level.

CSU’s are simply cheaper. Long beach and Cal poly could be borderline UC’s themselves if you rate some of those departments. The stigma attached to CSU is that they are lower, which is not true. The difference is they focus on the jobs market, and UC’s focus on graduate studies. Also, the money pumped into UC’s vastly overshadows the bread crumbs that CSU’s get left with. This in turn results in less decorated professors (nobel prize) and less resources.

If you’re pre-med, I would easily take CSU over UC because of the jacked up curves and crazy pre-meds at the UCs, especially at Berkeley. GPA, MCAT and extracurriculars are what matters to med school and chances are your GPA will be a lot better at a CSU than at a UC. Forget about the prestige of your undergrad uni when applying to med school. One of my high school friends graduated from SJSU and now shes at UCLA med school.

The stigma doesn’t stem from the fact they’re cheaper, it’s that they’re virtually impossible not to get into. For example, from a community college a 2.0gpa will get you into nearly ever cal state. Just have to get C’s or better in your classes.

Bottom & Middle Tier CSU’s (who cares about their names)<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< UCM & UCR<<< Other CSU’s<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<UCSB/SC/I/D<<<<<UCSD<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<UCB/UCLA
