Are Engineers generally unsocial career wise? Undecided major! Help

Hi everyone. I was thinking of majoring in Engineering as one of my possible choices. However, I heard that some Engineers such as Mechanical Engineers are not very sociable people. Would the careers also be very unsociable? If so, I can’t deal with that because I like socializing with people.

I was also thinking to study foreign language but I am not sure if that is very marketable sadly. What if I partnered it with Business? I’m very lost on what to major in and I’m feeling pressured. I am a freshman but I feel like I must make my decision soon. Especially if I do end up choosing Engineering because the later I choose, the more behind I would be in the curriculum resulting in a later graduation date.

Engineers can be social or unsocial just like everyone else.

You do need to start the course sequences early if you want to graduate on schedule in an engineering major.

Many engineers have to work on collaborative teams, one has to be sociable to be successful.

@ucbalumnus @northernmom61 Thanks for your replies! Have you guys worked in the Engineering fields before? Is it exciting? I also like connecting with people on a personal level and helping them out, I’m not sure if Engineering would help with that. Which type of Engineering is the most broad?

I have not, but I have many nephews who are engineers, and a daughter studying engineering and they are all very sociable. Their areas include mechanical (audio/sound), nuclear, automotive/mechanical, civil, general mechanical, and biomedical.

I have worked as an engineer. The personalities of engineers are just like everyone else. We range from highly social to anti social and everything in between. It may be fair to say that we tend to be more practical in general.

As far as the job, it varies. The work can be challenging and interesting. It depends on the job. It is impossible to generalize. In my experience, the day to day work load is always a little different which is nice. For most jobs, you will find teamwork to be critical to your success.
