I’ve heard from some sources like PrepScholar that her books for reading and writing are very good; however i’ve also seen some threads on here that say her books are trash and a waste of $40. I need to improve my CR and writing scores before the January test date, currently they both fluctuate between 700-750s. Are they actually good?
Yup!
Was hovering around the 720s before picking her book up. Went up to 800 on the real thing.
It’s a pretty good investment if you can afford it. Have to read it carefully and do all the exercises or else you are wasting your money.
@NotBadNotGood Thank you. Which book are you talking about, the Grammar or CR? are they both good? I think I will buy one.
Really? I’m surprised. I read these boards regularly and while not everyone’s a fan, I’ve never seen anyone say that they’re trash. If cost is an issue, you should start off by using the free materials on her website.
grammar is good; cr is trash.
I firmly believe that both of them are good.
Maybe @marvin100 can put in his opinion as he has much more experience than everyone here combined.
I think there’s a strong consensus on this forum hat their both good, if not the best resources available to prepare for the SAT CR and W sections (despite what @thetex thinks).
These books are meant for mere mortals, when you have the strong foundation in grammar and reading that @marvin100 has you really don’t need a prep book.
@CHD2013 @NotBadNotGood @thetex Thank you for letting me know. Would you happen to know of any books that are good for math? I’ve currently got Steve Warner’s advanced level math book, and I’d like to aim for an 800 in January. I’ve heard of Dr. Chung’s book but is that one really necessary? I’ve spent a lot of money on books already, and I ordered Barron’s Math Workbook last night. Are there equivalents in math to Erica Meltzer’s books in CR and Grammar?
Try to return the Barron’s math. Dr. Steve’s is excellent; if you want to supplement it get PWN the SAT or the book by Philip Keller.
I agree with @CHD2013
Do not get any sat prep books from princeton, barons, kaplan etc etc. I think they are all useless because they aren’t like the real thing at all. For subject tests they are great but stay away from them right now.
Don’t have an opinion on math because I never bought one.
writing great cr not really gonna make up for past reading
I think EM’s CR book is very good and her W book is also terrific (although Silverturtle’s grammar stuff on here is excellent and free).
@marvin100 thanks for your feedback! i ordered both books off the official site already. I just took the test today and I have many issues with identifying sentence errors.
