Are Essays That Important?

I'm applying to Stern. I have a 1470, 3 SAT II's all over 700, 4.63 weighted GPA, rank of 19/275 at top ranked high school. However, I just started writing my essay now. It isn't terrible, but I feel that it isn't that great either. Is the essay a really big part of the admissions decision? I want to know my chances if I had a so-so essay.

Also, I would like to know if the major I put on the app means anything other than my interests. I always thought I get to choose my major after sophomore year.

Thanks guys.

When I went last year to an NYU "information session", the lady from the admissions department giving the talk stressed again, again, again, and again the importance of the application essay in choosing candidate students. While I realise that this isn't strictly true, I do remember walking away with the impression that the essay was more important than any other factor.

Also, the major you indicate on your application form (if you do) is supposedly irrelevant as far as admissions is concerned, and once admitted you can puruse any major you like (keeping in consideration there being some "honors" majors, etc.).

what are the honors majors at stern? I never saw anything on this,is it international business? My essay was horrible and I got in.

I only know about some of the honors majors at CAS. For instance, international relations is an honors major and it looks like it is a whole other admissions process once already in the university to get into it.
