Are faculty jealous of football coach salary?

So when students fail, or don't get into the graduate schools of their choice, and don't make it in that first job interview, do faculty members get canned?

^^No, but that doesn't mean that danger of getting "canned" for poor performance is a risk unique to coaches. Every year many thousands of CEOs, executives, managers, sales reps, and rank and file employees lose their jobs when their companies' products don't sell very well.

The head coach at a Big Ten university is truly a CEO, the very top of the heap, and relative to the lowest paid worker in his "factory" and relative to his job security, compared with other CEOs, he is paid way too low.

Also schools are having to compete with offers from the pros--even for asst coaches.

Madison - University of Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, who last week interviewed for the quarterbacks coach job with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, has decided to remain with the Badgers.

UW coach Bret Bielema announced Chryst's decision today.

"I'm very pleased Paul will be staying with our program," Bielema said in a release. "It's a testament to all he has done here that an organization like the Cowboys would be interested in him. Our offense has progressed under his direction the past two seasons, and both Paul and I are looking forward to more of the same in 2007. In addition to Paul, it's great to have his wife, Robin, and their family remaining in Madison.

"When you have as successful a season as we had in 2006, it's not surprising that other teams have approached several of our coaches. I appreciate our coaches' commitment to our program at Wisconsin and I'm thrilled that our staff will return intact for the 2007 season."

Chryst, the Badgers' tight ends coach in 2002, returned to Wisconsin in 2005 and his impact on the UW offense has been undeniable.

In 2005, UW set school records for points scored in a season (446) and for season scoring average (34.3 ppg and scored at least 40 points six times. Most notably, the passing game improved as quarterback John Stocco set UW season records for passing yards (2,920), passing touchdowns (21) and pass completions (197).

Wide receivers accounted for 110 catches, with running backs accounting for 61 and tight ends 29. Running back Brian Calhoun became just the second player in NCAA Division I-A history to accumulate 1,500 yards rushing and 500 receiving yards in the same season.

Five members of that offensive unit were selected in the 2006 NFL Draft and several others were lost to graduation, so Chryst had to rebuild the 2006 offense with a new staff and eight new starters.

The result?

Chryst helped orchestrate Wisconsin's record 12-victory season with an offense that produced the ninth-highest scoring average (29.2 ppg) in school history, the second-winningest quarterback in school history as Stocco finished with 29 victories despite missing two games because of injury, an Outland Trophy winner in offensive tackle Joe Thomas, the school record-holder for receptions (61) and receiving yards (903) by a tight end in sophomore Travis Beckum and the Big Ten Conference's leading rusher (1,569 yards) and freshman of the year in tailback P.J. Hill.
