I graduated from Queens Borough Community College (CUNY) last semester and I transferred to Queens College (CUNY) this fall. I was told by my Financial aid advisor that I need to have 12 credits towards my major in order to receive Tap awards. I enrolled in 4 classes for this term therefore I have 12 credits. The lowest/first math for computer science major is Math-122 Pre-calculus but I don’t meet the prerequisites which is Math-115 College algebra for pre-calculus. Moreover, I am taking Math-115 with other classes but i was informed by financial aid advisor that I might not be eligible for tap awards because Math-115 don’t qualify for my major. I told my advisor that I need that class in order to take Math-122 and technically it is for my major. She haven’t responded for a week and I am really worried. Can someone please confirm this?
What they probably mean is that that low level math class isn’t “college level”…it’ may be high school level, so it doesn’t qualify. You need to add another class to your schedule.
While it is a class for credit you need to take the course because you need to build your math skills to take the math course required for your major (making it remedial) and not part of your program.
OP you will have to add another class to your schedule. meet with your advisor for advice on adding an additional class tha twill qualify.
Keep in mind by taking the minimum amount of credits required, you will run out of TAP before you complete your degree. Unless you are in an opportunity program (CD turning into SEEK now that you are in a 4 year school), you will only receive TAP for 4 years regardless of whether or not you complete your degree.
Saying that “technically is for my major” doesn’t cut it. It’s a high school level course that was supposed to be completed then. High school Algebra I and Geometry also lead up to the college math that is req’d for your major, but TAP isn’t going to pay for those classes either (if you hadn’t taken them already)
We’re NYS residents whose son is attending a state school. There are certain courses that students can take to prepare for other courses, but they don’t count in the calculation of credits when determining full-time status for financial aid. They’re usually 100-level courses, but I’ve seen 001-099 level classes too. Classes that students retake for grade replacement don’t count toward the credits needed for full-time study either. Those are just the way our rules work.
Classes at [Queensborough Community College](Academic Calendars) started almost 2 weeks ago. It looks like Aug. 31st was the last day to add a class. You need to call or visit them right away to confirm that. At this point, it looks like it’s too late to add a class unless they have online courses that start later than the regular classes. Some of our cc’s Upstate do so I suppose it’s a possibility, but you’d have to contact them to find out.
