Hi everyone,
I’m currently a freshman and was wondering if past students/recent alums know from their experience if intro classes (such as LS1a or Math Ma/1a/1b) are curved. From the syllabus it states that anything above a 90 is guaranteed an A-, but I was wondering how they differentiate between an A- and A. Thanks!

This from LS1a syllabus
Between the two on-line ICEs, the two midterms (consisting of two ICE modules each) offered during the semester, and the ICE Cube, there are nine equivalent ICE modules. **The lowest score from among these nine modules will be dropped when calculating your composite score. **If, for example, midterm 2 is your lowest score, then it will be scaled to be worth only one ICE module instead of the usual two ICE modules.
Alternatively, one of the ICE Cube modules can be dropped in which case the final would be scaled down to two ICE modules and all six of the ICE modules from the on-line ICEs and midterms would be included.
Top eight out of nine ICE module scores (“ICE Tray”): 55%
Problem Sets : 15%
Six lab assignments: 10%
BLUE SKY Proposal: 10%
Break-Outs: 5%
Section participation: 3%
Lecture Pre-Games: 2% *
The highest five out of six scores on “short” problem sets determine 5% of the final course grade, and the highest five out of six scores on “long” problem sets determine 10% of the final course grade.
Letter grades are assigned at the end of the course based on the percentage of total points earned during the semester. That said, if you score ≥90% you are guaranteed to receive at least a grade of A minus, while if you score ≥80% you are guaranteed to receive at least a grade of B.
I imagine those students who’s overall score is closer to 100 get an A, while those closer to 90 get an A-.
