I was wondering if it's worth it to take intro English classes at Berkeley. I'll probably go into a major that will only require minimal writing skills, but I still want to be proficient in English nevertheless. I can take the AP English language exam and pretty much skip general ed requirements for English, but I'm doubting atm whether or not that's a good idea. Would anyone consider these intro classes "weeder" classes?

i think weeders occur more in fields of science and engineering.

nonetheless, I have heard col writing 1a can be a bruise to your gpa (from my ex-roomie)

English language will only skip you out of R&C-a. You will still need R&C-b. Skipping out of R&C is generally a good idea.

Well, for some majors, like Chemical Engineering, you only need the first half of R&C.

This means that you could get a 4 in AP English Language & Composition and never worry about English again. I’m just wondering if this would be a good idea though, considering that I still want to be a proficient writer.

Wow Chem E only needs 1 semester of English? o.o

ChemE only needs R&C-a because they pack the curriculum in with so much ChemE work, so they have to cut down the R&C

you should note though that the fallout rate from CoC is high (and a lot of chemEs change to chem, which does require both R-A and R-B), so you may as well shoot for eliminating all the R&C requirement. I took the ap lit exam and got a 5, and I’m so relieved that I did it now. I don’t have to compete for enrollment for an R&C class, and it frees up more of my already-packed schedule.

Of course, I do feel guilty in that I don’t get the college writing experience. currently my only practice in writing is for chem 4’s massive formal lab reports and a breadth class. I probably will consider taking a college writing class in a community college over a summer sometime before I start considering the GRE.
