Should I apply to SUNY's as backup or LAC's
Answer solely on basis of quality of education

First thing’s first: LAC stands for Liberal Arts College. They don’t have engineering. However, few people know that it is possible to do some type of engineering in a LAC. Usually the array of engineering paths is limited and more so concentrated on the sciences and math…rather than industrial management. In place of engineering, LACs term their engineering majors under applied sciences. Computer science can easily be one of the few engineering themes that LACs offer. I would advise that you look in the specific LAC and see what TYPE of engineering it offers. You don’t ever want to have to compromise if your goal is to have a job postbac. Of course, in the current economy, it would be advisable to go through masters, in which you could focus on another type of engineering if you do find out in LAC that your choice of path wasn’t fit for you and your LAC didn’t provide another option.

The above poster is correct. Also, Lafayette is a LAC with a good engineering program. I would also look at Lehigh.

An alternative to a LAC is a small private technical university such as some of the [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://www.theaitu.org) schools.

There are a few LACs that do have decent engineering programs (So, the assertion that “they don’t have engineering” is not correct). E.g. [Harvey Mudd College](http://www.hmc.edu/)

Since I live on the east side, Mudd didn’t come to mind. However, it is one of the few LACs out there offering an exceptional amount of engineering options. Why? Mudd is known for mathematics. I’ve attached a discussion page that will help you with finding a couple more LACs like Mudd. However, in most cases…they will be more so under the sciences and the liberal initiative of the LAC.
