Hey everyone, I keep hearing that legacies at UVA are considered for in the in-state applicant pool for admission purposes, even if they are OOS. This seems rather counter-intuitive, but is there any validity to this statement?

I might consider applying here is I am counted as an in state resident, as I live in Florida.

Any help? An official statement would be preferable.

I believe on Dean J’s blog she stated that legacies are held to ~the same standards as in-state applicants, but pay OOS tuition if admitted. So in your case you have a better chance of getting in (IS admission rates are much higher) but no advantage financially.

From what my professors said, legacies are put into a separate pile during the admissions process. You will certainly be at an advantage and may be offered admission. I have heard that around ten percent of incoming students are legacies. I would assume that you would pay OSS tuition but I can’t be sure. =/ Sorry.

This subject produces much confusion in every admissions cycle. The admission rate for legacy applicants who are OOS is about the same as the rate for in-state applicants. Do not conclude, however, that legacy OOS applicants are as likely to be admitted as in-state because the credentials of the legacy OOS pool are considerably better than those of the in-state pool (stands to reason since the OOS pool has better credentials than the in-state overall). So, while legacy applicants get a close (or closer) look than non-legacy applicants, it is not a given that a legacy applicant gets in.

I was told that as part of affirmative action there are several different piles that applicants fall under. Such as: NOVA, South Eastern VA, OSS, legacies etc. I was told this is done to sort out and fairly assess their academic performance to their peers. I am just repeating what some professors had mentioned. Dean J, I apologize if that is incorrect but I felt as though it came from a reliable source.

Yes, as someone from OOS, I can attest that there is no price break for legacies. Nice idea. No such luck.

I assume that legacies get no extra credit toward Echols and the like, that the legacy tip is ONLY for admission and not a boost relative to non-legacies within the admitted collection.
