Just wondering, but are the meal plan expenses included in the Misc. expenses of the package, or am I expected to pay for that separately? oh and are there good vegetarian options for student like me? I went to spring open campus and wasn't too impressed with the choices..but maybe i overlooked some items
Thanks :]

Generally, the package is based on the COA which includes room & board.

yes meal plans are included in the estimated cost of attendance. And so are books and transportation.

I am pretty sure that you did not experience all the campus dining areas on your spring open house visit. The problem with food at the U of R is not the variety of places to eat or the variety of the food options.

All the three main dining areas (Douglas, Danforth, & The Pit) have very good options for vegetarians. At the Pit, the Blimpie station (like subway) have vegetarian things on the menu, and then there is a fully equipped salad station with soup options as well right there. When you go to Douglas, you can pretty much pick and choose to make your own vegetarian plate, and there is also a vegetarian station. For Danforth, they have two vegetarian stations and just like Douglas, you can make other areas vegetarian as you please.

Then for the little places to eat (Hillside, Common, Starbucks, and Pura Vida), these are places that mainly cater for to go foods and breakfasts so you will definitely find non meet options there.

D goes to UR and eats sushi alot. However, I think she has to use declining dollars which is the cash portion of your meal plan when you pay for a meal by declining dollars rather than by a meal ticket.

Visited last week and the only problem D had with Rochester was food. We ate at Danforth and there were hardly any vegetarian choices. One station had a veggie wrap. There was one veggie soup. We were told that we could ask and they would make veggie options - but when D asked for a grilled cheese sandwich, she was told that was not possible. S stood in the pasta line for ages (over 15 mins) and got pasta with alfredo sauce (only non-meat sauce). Tried one bite and then put the plate away - apparently, the pan had been used to make pasta with sausage for the person in line before him and his pasta tasted strongly of sausage as well.

D really liked UR a lot - the only negative thus far being the food. We are trying to convince her that this might not be a problem and that the other dining halls might be better for vegetarians. Would love to hear confirmation of this from current students, especially those who are vegetarian!

are u indian??
reason-desi_chick

yeah she is i think. hello from an indian. (i posted some hindi lyrics on this topic a couple days ago but got an infraction for it)

hi fellow indian

D was vegetarian for a while and said the vegetarian options were not terribly plentiful in either Danforth or Douglass.

If you want to look at the dining hall menus:

@ ansrox and sharath: yes i am :]
@ wayoutwestmom: thanks, the link helped out :]

Having been exposed to veggie options at a number of schools, I’d say they are still lacking in imagination almost everywhere. I think much of that is the American - Western? - idea that vegetables are things you serve next to a protein.
