Or I have to buy it?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, the most that would be preinstalled on the computer would be a trial. If you want word talk to your school about what deal you can get. I got Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate for 59.00 through my school.

I know on my PC laptop it did not come preinstalled.

Depends on the computer and what kind of bundles. I know with Dell you can add it on.

Usually not, and if so it is often a trial. Get it through your school at a discount or use OpenOffice.

the computers i’ve seen lately have trials that dont run out.
they have a window that pops up and bugs you, but you can continue to use it indefinitely.

There is no free lunch. But, there are discounts. Some packages will come with MS Office installed. But, it is still included in the price, just like the Windows operating system. As a student, you can buy MS Office for around $60.

You could install an older version.

I’m running Office 2000 on this computer.

5 the ones you are talking about are fully functioning trials for a certain period of time. After that period of time has passed you can still run the program but it is stripped down and you can only run the most basic functions of the software.

Almost certainly, your computer will not come with Office included. That would be very unusual.

It is well worth it to get through your university. At mine, Office 2007 is available for $33!

Just get OpenOffice, no point in wasting your money.

Wow, I remember that my child got Office 2008 (for Mac) for about $90. He got a full version, I think.

I wish know where to get a $33 Office 2007! I only know MS employee (or maybe those students who are in the CS department) who can get very cheap M$ software.

The University of Texas at Austin has a computer store which sells it to those with a connection to UT. Here is the link. It is on the front page under “save money.”

+1 for open office

mcat if your child is still a student they can get it here for 59.00. This is where my school sent me to get Office 07 Ultimate.

http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

You do not have to be in a CS major or program to get it at that price. Just a student with an edu e-mail account.

Check with your school! Some (such as Pitt) offer Office for free.

RebelCats, Thanks for the info. My child is still a student. But we have already got Office 2008 for Mac. (in February, cost us almost $80 at that time.) So we will not need Office 2007 any time soon. But it is nice to know a place to buy MS office at a lower price. Thanks.

Thanx, RebelCats! We’re in the process of spec’ing and ordering a laptop for my S. This offer saves $20.00 off the Coop price @ the school and ~ 200.00 off the Lenovo pre-installed price! Also, FYI: Lenovo is offering free window 7 upgrades from Vista as of purchases made from Jun-26 onward.

Guys, I just bought the Office Ultimate Steal. Have any one had any unpleasant experience with this purchase?

I bought Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 online via the Ultimate Steal Promotion or whatever. That’s the best deal if you really need Microsoft Word and the other applications.

As for the OP, you can get these programs installed on the PC if you order it via Dell or something (and probably adjust and in a sense, custom build your PC), but I wouldn’t recommend it. It would be much more expensive.

It’s not really vital that you get these programs though. I go to a Cal State and they have Word, etc installed on all the computers provided and I don’t mind hanging in the library doing my work and being in that environment. I have it on my laptop in the event that I don’t feel like being in the library

The only thing I have heard bad about it is people lose the program, like they end up having to call or contact customer service because they lost the .exe file to install the program.

Don’t buy the discs that they offer for $13 more. Just send the .exe file that you initially download to a compressed zipped file
and burn it to a CD and store away for future use.

You can install it to a desktop pc and a laptop from what I tried. I haven’t tried to install it to more laptops or desktops, but I heard that it is not allowed or does not work. Not for certain however.
Other than that, you should have no worries…I brought it using this offer about 9 months ago. Haven’t had any problems.
