Egelloca, you're right, my grammar was bad, and it didn't help that I just woke up when I wrote that. I'm not the best at English, and yes, I am taking courses at my CC :). I'm sorry that it bothers you (no sarcasm intended).

Anything else you'd want me to clarify or say? I'd be more than happy to if that means you would understand.

Please, don't get too caught up by the little things. I tried my best to make a fair point. I thought your last comment was uncalled for and was an immature insult, as it showed no relevance to this thread.

"So, hello. Wretched middle age cc student here.
I am so offended by this thread that I can't even see straight."

Then why did you start reading it?? The title was pretty clear...you could have just disregarded it.

"Yes, we talk about our kids and family. What the hell are we supposed to talk about?"

Possibly something having to do with the subject of the class. Most of my classes require less talking and more listening. People waste the classes time talking about their personal lives.

"Oh, and the whole "They are so annoying because they sit in the front with the tape recorder and actually do their assignment"?"

I agree that was a stupid statement.

"Should you join a support group to talk about being going to parties and having boyfriends or girlfriends?"

No, this is why people have friends outside of class. I have not heard anyone interrupt the class to talk about any of these things.

The thing that makes SOME middle aged people stand out in cc is that they act like they are so wise and try to tell us younger people what to do (and how to do it). Please spare us of your "wisdom" (aka: bitterness + superiority complex) :

"No, this is why people have friends outside of class. I have not heard anyone interrupt the class to talk about any of these things."

I apologize for my statement about that then. I didn't realize that the poster meant the middle aged people were interrupting the class to talk about these things, I thought it was regarding social talk.

I only had one middle aged guy in my calc II, he was so funny and odd. He would ask questions like "can i use my previous knowledge on this exam" Then he would come up w/ weird solutions to probs that were proly wrong, but my teacher didn't know calc either and didn't care so agreed w/ him. He was nice too.

I'm at least smart enough to know the importance of an education at a time when it's the most beneficial to me. Middle aged people in college werent smart enough to know of its importance, but now they think they're smarter than us?

Also, I've heard more than one middle-age student criticizing the "younguns" for not taking their education seriously. Just because they were stupid out of high school and werent good enough for college or didnt realize how important it was to go until they got knocked up and had a bunch of kids to support, doesnt mean I am.

Only highly unintelligent people can make this sort of comments on old or middle age folks who want to make some changes in his/her life. No one should assume that he/she is immortal. Time will pass, and one day youll be called the same welcoming way...

kevintech: the problem isn't the elderly (well first of all middle-aged is not elderly) anyway...the problem is with annoying middle-aged students at CC....

I have seen alot of middle aged even senior citizens in some of my classes. One of these people stood out though. I was taking a biology course and it wasn't that this girl knew everything because she actually knew very little at all. What made her annoying was that she was rude to me and my fellow classmates. We would be in lab and she would start to whine that she couldn't figure out how to use a microscope so someone went to help her and she didn't say please or thank you. She even started yelling at the kid cause his assistance didn't help. The professor thought she was annoying as well and began to ignore her. lol. i almost wanted to explode on this girl but she dropped 2 weeks into the semester. thank god.

But fortunately I have met some really nice older people. One guy was in my film class. we would talk about sports, movies, etc. I have seen the guy around campus and he always greets me with a smile and a hello. Another was a lady who was also nice and sometimes shared snacks she would bring with others. each one of these students brought valuable info to the class.

Of course, at any CC (especially near or in a large city) you are going to get adults who are strange (perhaps some may even be mentally ill). It's a community college, after all! Anyone can register. What do you expect?

This thread is so pointless. Do you want to kick out the "wacky" people from your CC? Well, then it would become a selective college, and maybe you wouldn't be able to get in yourself! Deal with life, people!
You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I am almost 40, have a GPA of 3.84 (and increasing, this semester) and I am the best in almost of the classes. I usually open my mouth only and only when nobody knows the answers and the teacher, who knows my knowledge from my tests, asks specifically for my opinion.

You ask me "what I am doing in college at my age" and I ask you "why aren't you in a four year degree school, like Berkeley or Stanford, AT YOUR AGE ????".

I was expecting "a different level of discourse" from the people enlisted in a serious learning/studying activity. The people who, apparently, intend to become (in some years from now) the upper echelon of this society.
(Will they?)

But it doesn't matter, any way.
You'll be at my age, soon enough.

PS.

Did anyone count how many YOUNG students attending CC are annoying or totally ignorant about the taught material? And how many of them drop classes in the middle of the semester because they just don't manage?

"Did anyone count how many YOUNG students attending CC are annoying or totally ignorant about the taught material? And how many of them drop classes in the middle of the semester because they just don't manage?" Yes, I have. there are a lot of dumbasses that go to CC. The reason I am attending CC is because in february of 2005 I decided to graduate high school a year early and was too late on applications. I have planned on transferring since the first day of classes, as have most CC students.

"You ask me 'what I am doing in college at my age' and I ask you 'why aren't you in a four year degree school, like Berkeley or Stanford, AT YOUR AGE ????'." I am sure you have noticed this already but getting into ivy league schools is harder than it was 22 years ago. It has become a necessity to go to college these days, making the competition even greater.

It is understandable that you are trying to be the best in your class. You paid good money to take the classes. Nobody here is bashing that. What we are talking about is that many of the older students tend to give off a vibe of superiority and know-it-allness.

WEll, I suppose that giving off "vibes of superiority and know - it - allness" is merely connected to one's personality and not to one's age. People that want to show off their apparent superiority exist at every age and and in every framework, in schools, at work places - everywhere.

I am sorry that some of you were annoyed by old students. In the college where I study and already took 16 classes, there are such wonderful people ! Only once a couple of two (btw, young people) disturbed repeatedly the philosophy class, because they knew the material from a previous course, but the teacher dealt with them in a very professional manner. Except for them, I never met one single person that I could have considered "annoying". It looks like I am lucky.

Heheh. For the lower level classes, I'd say nearly half of them. Of course, they would never put on a show in front of the whole class like some adult students do... But when it comes to group work or lab work, the slacking is incredible (In higher level classes it's not so bad).

There is absolutely no reason 1/2 of the kids at my CC should even be in school. It's absolutely pointless.

I'm a 27 year old returning student, btw. I look a bit younger than I am, so most students see me as just a fellow student.... But I can't help but look at these young slackers with a suspicious eye (j/k :))

That's one reason we need trade schools (as in Germany). The rigours of higher education ain't for everybody. I have to admit I get tired with academia sometimes. Don't always blame the person. If our elementary/middle/high school systems hadn't been so crappy we would have none of these folks that seem to annoy you.

Tho I have to admit how much luck we have especially with this transfer to a better four year insitution thingy. In China, if you're toast you're toast for life.
