I asked my professor for a letter of rec last week for a scholarship program, and he complied but he had a bad attitude when I went to talk to him. I THOUGHT he liked me, and I did really well in his class- basically the highest grade. He told me he would be able to fill it out really quickly because he has a standard template that he will use for my letter - aka a generic recommendation. He also mentioned that he just finished 10 letters for other students. Later on in our conversation he became nicer and mentioned that I was one of his better students... but then...---Today I had to drop off the envelope & postage for him in his office, but another student was already there talking with him. I walked in since I would only be there for a matter of seconds, but he got really annoyed and didn't even greet me. He was just like "What do you need? Why are you here?" Does anyone think I'll get a poor letter of recommendation due to these circumstances? I mean, the professor is not one that will sabotage students, but I just feel really nervous about it because of the way he treated me.

first off, a generic letter is likely to say little more than “student X was in my class and received a grade of A”. Not that helpful to a scholarship committee. You didn’t help it by barging in when someone else was there; you could have waved from the hallway and seen if he invited you in, returned another time, or left the supplies in his dept mailbox with a letter thanking him for his help.

Great. So I am getting a bad recommendation
I really didn’t mean to “barge” in, after I opened his door and saw that someone was in there, I was prepared to leave, but then he got all hostile towards me.

I actually wouldn’t worry about it, if he just happens to usually have a “grumpy” personality sometimes. There are teachers like this at my school, and writing recommendations for students is not particularly fun work.

anyway it sounds like this guy is a jerk. They let those people earn PhD’s too Any chance you could ask another prof for an extra rec for the program?

Well, it’s kind of late now. I did get one rec from my counselor and another one from a summer program I attended, and the recommenders let me read my letter. They were pretty good and impressed me… so hopefully it will offset the generic one from my teacher.
