Hello all
I am a rising sophomore in Fairfax County, Va. My unweighted GPA is a 3.55 and my weighted is a 3.84. I know, this is not my best showing, and I honestly think I could have done much better. I also participate in Model UN, Debate, History Club, and I am on the Cross Country team. AP's are not yet available in my school, but I plan on taking 10 APs throughout my HS career. I also take all honors/AP. I am going to bust my a** for the next three years and plan on getting all A/A-. I also am going to run for president in model un and for my class. my school has a 4 point gpa scale, and +.5 for honors and +1 for APs.

So my question is, am i screwed for getting into any Ivies, specifically Harvard, Princeton and Columbia, and also UVA, Georgetown, and NYU? And how can I lift my chances for these schools? Also, please recommend some schools, because I really do care about my education after high school.

Are you screwed? No, it’s only freshman year. Will it hurt? Yes, because you’ll be competing against people who had 4.0s their freshman year. What you do from here forward is critical.

It terms of recommended schools, you’re only a rising sophomore. Relax, work hard, enjoy high school, and start obsessing about college in a year and a half or so.

No you’re not completely screwed, but it’ll definitely hurt. Certain schools like Princeton from my recollection place little to no weight on freshman grades, but that doesn’t mean other schools will not. Just keep in mind you’re a rising sophomore, enjoy high school and do you what you enjoy. College comes afterwards.

Finally, don’t plan ahead too much. You’re still a freshmore. There is no way to tell what your test scores will be like, or how many APs you’ll take, or even how your ECs will turn out. Everything is subject to change and its up to you to keep an open mind. Best of luck.

^^Yeah seriously, you’re only a freshman and a 3.55 isn’t even that bad. You still have the next two years to raise it to a possible 3.89. Princeton and Stanford don’t even include freshman year in regards to GPA (still affects your class rank though) so that’s two schools right there where you have a fresh start from 10th grade on.

Wow. You seem pretty enthused and focused which is good, but try to use this time to develop your interests. You seem like an awesome student, so just keep it up. A lot of people get really caught up in getting into a really selective school and forget about everything they care about. The best thing you could do right now is just take it easy, stay involved in things you actually care about, and keep your grades up. Colleges look for passionate people - explore your interests, find your passion: the rest will follow.

Seriously people A high B is doable freshmen year. Wanna trade my 66.111 gpa freshmen year? Yeah thought so, you will live, you have three years left.
