Would anybody be able to share their stats that got them into Indiana-Bloomington, Purdue, or Ohio State? I really want to go to one of these schools (especially OSU), but I have two Cs freshman year. The classes I got Cs in would be English Honors with a 74, and Algebra 1 with a 71. I will also end the year with a C- in chemistry, and take no AP or honors this year. However, the rest of my grades are above an 85 for last year, and have a 3.1 GPA on a 5.0 scale. Next year, I am taking AP CS and Music theory. Is there still a chance for me to get in? I wish to major in political science at Indiana, and aviation if I go to Purdue or Ohio State.

Ah still a sophomore. You got some time. Those C’s are gonna hurt but there’s nothing really you can do about them so just make sure you do well junior and senior year to show an upward trend and balance out a lower underclassman gpa. Also try to beef up your ECs a bit with perhaps a leadership role or two and varsity lax would be pretty good. Come next year, do well on the SAT/ACT and that will help show colleges you can be academically successful.
@TheAverageNerd Of course GPA and ECs aren’t the only things that contribute to your application. Having good essays and strong test scores (29+ ACT) will help your chances. However it is worth mentioning schools will primarily look at your overall coursework throughout high school rather than scores to make a decision. A 3.1 GPA on a 5.0 scale I believe is a 2.8 GPA on a standard 4.0 scale (I could be wrong). But assuming that’s true, that low of a GPA alone is almost prohibitive to your admission into these schools. All of these schools have average GPAs of about 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. This means that your acceptance isn’t impossible but you’re going to need to show these schools something extremely outstanding in your essays or some other way to convince them to admit you. It would also be worthwhile for you to utilize the section where you can explain your GPA and maybe why you couldn’t get the GPA you wanted for some outstanding reason when you apply. I will be attending OSU this fall for engineering. I was also accepted to Purdue for engineering. For reference, my unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale was a 3.9 and my weighted was a 4.2. I truly wish you the best! Go Buckeyes!
Hey, their reviews are mostly based on gpa and test scores from what I’ve seen, so if you could provide that I could give you a better answer. If I were you, I would focus on taking harder courses, at least honors, and try to get your gpa up. If you can, take the SAT or ACT multiple times until you get a desirable score. You can see the average gpa/test scores of the middle 50% of their freshman class on their website, but I’ve seen people with lower scores get in/people with higher scores get denied.
I was admitted to all of these. I also screwed up a fair bit my freshman and sophomore year, ending with a weighted GPA of 3.8 on a 4 scale. Freshman year first semester, I got 2 As (gym and band), 4 Bs (Geography Honors Biology, Honors Algebra 2, Spanish 2) and 1 C (Honors English). Second semester I got all of these grades up 1 letter grade (except honors biology where I got close but missed an A by 1%). Sophomore year first semester I only got 2 Bs transcript and thought all was going well. Then second semester I struggled with personal issues and it showed on my transcript as my grades in Spanish and math dropped a letter grade. However, I got all As my junior year and took more AP classes I was interested in rather than what the counselor said to take. This is why I excelled as I truly was interested in what I was learning.
To be honest, your stats aren’t that bad. I have a friend that got into IU with 3 Ds his first semester junior year after having straight As freshman and sophomore year. He did not get into Purdue, however, yet I know people with low grades that did.
You need to have a strong test score (assuming that will still be a thing). You also need to find more extracurriculars to be involved in and write really strong essays. I was involved in about 15 throughout high school (with 7 of those being in music), but the more you have where you can show leadership, the better off you’ll be.
If you truly want to attend somewhere, just apply because you never know and may get in even if your numbers are below the average.
So I see I’ve stumbled onto your post again. I’m going to be honest here bud, you’re not going to get in there. I got rejected (OOS) and here are my stats
Here were my stats when applying:
3.8UW/4.47W
1570 SAT
800 Math
770 English
11 APs
Extracurriculars:
Wrote a paper on quantum mechanics that got published after working on an internship with top professors for 4 years
Marketing intern at major firm
2 Varsity sports (captain of basketball junior year)
A lot of music groups
Drum major junior and senior year
Volunteered with military organizations
Started a club at school that became very popular among the students and faculty
Altar boy at church
I still don’t understand why I got rejected as I have one of the best resumes of people I know and even had rec letters from the mayor and principal of the school
You can check each school’s Common Data Set to see what their mid-50th percentile tests scores and GPA are. Most also prominent display them on their websites. If your scores are below the lower end of their range consider them a reach. If they’re with the range, they’re a match. If they’re solidly above, then they’re a high match.
Then look at your budget and run each college’s Net Price Calculator to get an estimate of what they might cost. Are your parents willing/able to pay the net cost?
Check your state schools in NJ and pick a couple safeties (schools you’re sure to get into, are affordable, and that you’d be happy to attend). Find those first.
And maybe drop the idea of redeeming yourself for whatever challenges you faced this year and last. You’re on whatever track you’re on. Do the best you can and find a school that fits you. Don’t try to pick based on rankings. Schools have much more to offer than prestige. Find out what those things are and apply to the schools that are right for you.
Short answer yes.
Their deal is scholar athletes who are strong Catholics.
C’s aren’t on the same plane.
Anyway your #1 priority should be
to know your parents’ budget
to find 5-6 schools for kids with
2.8-3.2 GPA. Run the NPC on all of them and pick the 2 cheapest.
to find 10-12 schools for 3.3-3.5 GPA. Start at CTCL.org. Run the NPC on them. Pick the 4, least expensive. Note that your odds of studying CS at a CTCL college is much higher than at a public university here CS is with Engineering or Science or even has its own college.
to apply to 3 state/public universities in your state as soon as the app opens.
ONLY THEN do you worry about ‘prestige’ universities.
Choose them so that you’re are at the median for both GPA and scores.
Start prepping for the PSAT. If you’re not in lockdown you’ll soon be. Time to order test prep books so they arrive on time.
Note that taking AP CS and AP music theory is nice for some colleges but is not going to be a tip at any top 40 university/LAC.
Yes! It definitely is possible to get in with a few Cs. However, you should try to get mostly As junior and senior year, straight As if possible, in the most difficult course load possible to make up for the loss of GPA your Cs have given you. I was recently admitted for summer at university park with around 3-4 Cs in high school, but those Cs were all C+ in AP classes, and because I got mostly As in the rest of my classes in the most difficult course track as well my overall unweighted GPA was a 3.7. You look good extracurricular-wise, but you should start studying for the ACT or SAT now and try to aim for at least a 30+ or a 1400+ for the best shot of admission. Best of luck!

However, I am taking AP CS and Music theory my junior year. Is there still a chance for me to get in?
