Are my chances of going to a great school ruined?

I currently have a 3.32 GPA, coming off a 3.6 GPA spring semester.

I had hopes of raising my GPA to a 3.5, in hopes of transferring to a top 25 school for the Fall 2012 semester. So I decided to take some summer courses this summer. Three to be exact.

However, I am doing badly in one of my classes, and it's most likely that I'll pass the class with a "C", which will reduce my GPA back down to a 3.11. To make matters worse, it's a 4 credit course. I've run the numbers and there's no way that I can even get a 3.4 GPA by the time I send out transfer applications. My best case scenario is a 3.35.

I am crushed, and don't know what to do. All the hard work I did last semester, will go out the window. I've talked to the professor, and he said he doesn't give extra credit. I don't know what to do. I extremely saddened to the point, that's it's 5:30 in the morning, and I can't sleep because it's all I'm thinking about.

I see absolutely no way that I can go to schools like Rice, Northwestern, USC, and Vanderbilt, now. Schools that I had my hearts sought out for, for so long now. :(

I'm completely heart-broken, and in need of some serious guidance. Please give me some advice.

:(

No, your chances surely are not ruined.

Where are you coming from? You still have a shot at some of these schools if you can show to them that you’ve made the best of your situation

USC and Vandy are not THAT big of a stretch to be honest. You still would have a pretty good shot at them if you work hard. Not to mention, I applied to NU with a 3.3 from an LAC, and I still consider myself a competitive applicant. If I get in, I’ll let you know to make you feel better. If I don’t, well I got into OSU, and will probably get into Purdue, so there are options.

Don’t fret too much, your life isn’t over.

As much as I hate to say it, yes you’re screwed. The only one of top 30 or so schools I could see you reasonably transferring to is Notre Dame, and even that would be a fairly big stretch. Hope however is not lost. Where do you go to school and why do you want to transfer?

it would help a ton to know where you go to school, what your EC’s are, what you plan to study, etc.

you are not screwed until we know all that info., if you have no EC’s, bad/average test scores, mediocre high school record, are going to a community college, and are applying to the most competitive majors there are, then yes, you probably are screwed for going to a top 25, but we dont know until you tell us

It’s going to be very tough with that GPA. Maybe you should stretch your options to the likes of Wisconsin, UIUC, and other top 50s.

Why don’t you stay an extra year, get A’s, and apply for fall 2013 with a much better GPA? I mean if getting into a top 25 school is that important to you.

Just drop the class?
